Job Description

THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY OPEN TO CURRENT, PERMANENT EMPLOYEES OF SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA FLOOD PROTECTION AUTHORITY - WEST DISTRICT ONLY. OUR MISSION TO PROTECT WEST BANK HOMES AND BUSINESSES BY ENSURING THAT OUR FLOOD PROTECTION SYSTEM FUNCTIONS AS DESIGNED. OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
This position operates herbicide spray equipment as well as other mobile equipment to accomplish an efficient and practical application of herbicides and perform vegetation management for the Authority's mitigation maintenance program. This position serves on the Mitigation Management crew for the SLFPA-W to Operate, Maintain, Repair, Rehabilitate, or Replace over 2800 acres of mitigation property owned by the West Jefferson Levee District and associated with the West Bank and Vicinity Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System's impacts to 404 wetlands. They will operate mobile equipment to accomplish transportation, maintenance or construction tasks associated with the Mitigation program. Two years of experience in mobile equipment operations. Job Duties:
Operates spray trucks and auxiliary equipment in accordance with safety regulations, utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment as required. Applies herbicides in accordance with Department of Agriculture and EPA policies and regulations. Ensures proper herbicides are used for all vegetation maintenance activities, following Louisiana state regulations and label instructions. Maintains the vegetation on over 2800 acres of mitigation property by applying herbicide by the appropriate prescription, operating mobile equipment to access or maintain sites as necessary for mitigation success. Maintains and regularly updates all records pertaining to the spraying of herbicides, ensures work order system is up to date and accurate. Assists mechanic with minor repairs to equipment as required, including disassembling and reassembling parts, lubricating and fueling equipment, etc. Assists in performing scheduled preventive maintenance on equipment as required, including fluid and filter changes, parts lubrication, etc. Trains newer employees in operation and care of equipment. Participates in flood protection maintenance activity throughout the year as requested to assist in providing time critical assistance for the flood protection system. Operates mobile equipment such as mowers, tractors, and skid steer loaders as necessary to assist the levee maintenance crews or to perform necessary maintenance on the mitigation properties. Performs labor duties during off-season and inclement days by cutting trees, picking up paper and trash, using mowers and weed trimmers, making sandbags, etc. Reports to work during emergency events as needed and remains on site until emergency has subsided. Maintains on site preparations in order to be available on call as emergency conditions require.
