The role focuses on promoting healthy turf growth, controlling weeds, pests, and diseases, while strictly following safety regulations and product labels. This position often requires state-specific licensing or certification (e.g., a commercial pesticide applicator license, such as Category 6 or similar in many states), as handling restricted-use chemicals is regulated. Key Responsibilities Mix, load, and apply fertilizers, herbicides (pre- and post-emergent), pesticides, fungicides, and other turf treatments accurately using sprayers, spreaders, or other specialized equipment. Inspect lawns, turf, trees, and shrubs to identify weeds, insect infestations, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, or other issues, then determine and recommend appropriate chemical treatments. Fill sprayer tanks with water and chemicals according to precise formulas, calibrating equipment for correct application rates. Operate and maintain application equipment, including backpack sprayers, truck-mounted sprayers, spreaders, and related tools, while performing minor repairs and preventative maintenance. Follow label instructions, weather conditions, safety protocols, and environmental regulations to ensure safe, effective, and compliant applications (e.g., considering droplet size, wind, and coverage depth). Manage daily application routes, document treatments (e.g., keep records of chemicals used, areas treated, and rates), and provide customer service by explaining services and addressing questions. Adhere to safety standards, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safe chemical storage, handling, and disposal. In some roles, assist with related lawn care tasks like mowing, edging, aerating, overseeding, or basic landscaping. Required Qualifications and Skills Valid state pesticide applicator license/certification (often required before or shortly after hire; involves passing exams on core pesticide knowledge and category-specific topics like turf/ornamental). Valid driver's license with a clean record (often required for operating company vehicles). Knowledge of common turfgrass issues, chemicals, and application techniques. Ability to lift heavy equipment/chemical containers, work outdoors in varying weather, and perform physical tasks. Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and customer service skills. Familiarity with equipment operation and basic math for mixing ratios and calibrations.
