About Us Roots and Shoots Nursery is a quickly growing nursery and garden center specializing in native plants and southern fruits. We approach gardening with a sense of excitement and wonder, helping connect people to nature through high-quality plants, a wide selection, and education that is fun and approachable, all in support of our mission: "To breathe life into landscapes so people and nature can flourish together." Position Summary We are seeking a highly organized, hands-on Operations Manager to lead daily nursery and sales operations, support commercial sales, oversee plant inventory, and manage staff. This role works closely with our leadership team to ensure smooth, successful operations across all aspects of the business, from plant production to retail. This position is ideal for someone who is just as comfortable working behind a computer as they are outdoors with plants. The right candidate brings strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to balance administrative responsibilities with hands-on work in a dynamic environment. Our nursery can be fast-paced, but we balance that with a collaborative team culture, engaging work, and ongoing opportunities to learn while helping people connect more deeply with nature. Key Responsibilities Lead and prioritize daily nursery and sales operations, ensuring excellent customer service and smooth workflow Utilize technology in day-to-day operations, including Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Chat, Gmail) and POS systems such as Square Coordinate staff scheduling and workflows to ensure tasks are completed efficiently Work with retail and wholesale customers to build quotes and invoices Oversee order fulfillments, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and clear communication with customers. Maintain a strong understanding of our plant inventory, including both in-house production and availability from wholesale growers Collaborate with the management team for retail and wholesale sales, marketing initiatives, projects, and events. Assist with vendor coordination, contractor payments, and basic bookkeeping. Communicate clearly and professionally with customers via email, phone, and social media Qualifications 3+ years of experience in management, horticulture, nursery operations, or a related field Highly organized with strong attention to detail, follow-through, and the ability to manage workflows in a fast-paced environment Comfortable balancing administrative responsibilities with hands-on physical work and contributing wherever needed Technologically proficient, with strong working knowledge of Google Workspace (primarily Sheets, along with Docs, Chat, and Gmail), POS systems such as Square, and other operational tools Friendly, collaborative, and professional with strong communication and leadership skills Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, and willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions Working knowledge of gardening and native plants preferred Degree in a science, horticulture, business, or management-related field preferred Expectations This is a full-time position, typically Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend shifts as needed.
