June 3, 2026- This class inspects for, locates, and identifies disease transmitting and nuisance mosquito and other public health arthropods and implements control measures.
This is a "mandatory-testing" position that requires Drug Testing.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Conducts field observations in order to detect the presence or absence of larval mosquitoes or breeding potential and to determine "hot spots" in assigned area of responsibility
Observes and treats areas for mosquitoes by utilizing appropriate methods
Determines whether to employ larvicides and/or biological control methods when treating areas for mosquitoes and selects appropriate chemical treatments to ensure non-target organisms and environmental concerns are not adversely disturbed
Provides customer service by responding to citizen requests for service
Conducts observations to determine the number of adult mosquitoes that land on an individual for a specified period of time
Provides educational assistance to citizens regarding mosquito control and awareness by instructing individuals on the dangers of mosquito exposure
Records rain gauge amounts following rainfall events
Performs follow-up treatment procedures to determine if treatment yielded desired results
Performs other duties as assigned
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.); or, a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence
Must receive a Florida Public Health Pest Control license within six months of employment
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics (KSAOs):
field observation methods
chemical handling procedures
conducting field observations
observing traffic rules and regulations
handling chemicals
communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction lift and carry forty pounds
perform mathematical calculations in order to calculate areas and pesticide dosages read and understand pesticide labels, material safety data sheets (MSDS), and mosquito control manuals

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity, as well as repetitive motions.
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, intense noises and travel.
