Job Description

Works under the supervision and direction of the Tree Crew Mosquito & Herbicide Control Team Leader. Responsible for maintaining trees, shrubs, and bushes along right-of-ways, alleys, and city-owned properties. The individual will operate tree maintenance equipment, bucket trucks, and required safety equipment while performing assigned tasks. Performs tree trimming and maintenance duties at ground level or at various heights on right-of-ways, alleys, and other city-owned properties. Climbs to heights (sometimes exceeding sixty feet) using climbers and safety belts to perform duties.
Operates various equipment:
chain saws, hydraulic circle saws, pruners, rope and saddle, power trimmers, and chipper attachments. Loads, transports, and unloads limbs, brush, and debris at the designated disposal site.
Operates trucks:
bucket, flatbed, loader, and other vehicles assigned to the department. Responsible for the protection of personal property while removing limbs, brush, and debris. Performs daily preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment. Attends seminars and other educational courses on tree maintenance. This department may require employees to perform a variety of other assigned duties. Shifts may vary according to the needs of the city. A minimum of eighteen months of training and experience with tree climbing or tree work with the city of Florence or in related work. High school education, GED certificate, or equivalent experience. Must have or obtain a Class A commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement within six months of hire date. Thorough knowledge and understanding of various pruning and trimming techniques. Must have strong skills in the proper use of ropes, saddles, spurs, climbers, and other tools pertaining to tree climbing and maintenance. Must have strong skills in the proper operation of bucket trucks with outriggers. Must have strong skills in the proper operation of chain saws and other hand-held equipment used in tree maintenance and removal. Ability to read and follow job site instructions. Ability to follow safety procedures and regulations and effectively utilize safety equipment. Ability to work in and around moving vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of the City of Florence streets and subdivisions. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to work at extreme heights. Ability to perform duties in all weather conditions. Ability to climb, walk, stoop, and bend for a full shift. Ability to lift 50 pounds (more on occasion). Ability to work in and around moving equipment and vehicles. Subject to be called out in times of emergencies.
