Parks and Forestry Division Status:
Full Time, 40 Hours; 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, M-F, Laborers Local 272, Level L-3
Compensation:
Starting wage will be commensurate with experience. Includes comprehensive benefits including Pension, Health Insurance and Paid Time Off with regular opportunities for overtime.
Requirements:
Must possess a current, valid, and unrestricted Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License and a driving record which proves responsible and lawful driving habits and Public Safety Hoisting Engineering License that allows operation of any motor driven equipment or vehicle. Candidates must meet these requirements in order to qualify for the position.
Summary:
Perform skilled, semi-skilled and non skilled work in the Parks and Forestry Division of the Melrose Department of Public Works. The work includes the installation, repair, maintenance and care of trees, shrubs and other similar materials. Operates cars, trucks, equipment, power tools, and crane and lift equipment, chippers and grinders, power saws, spray equipment and other miscellaneous tools and equipment; and performs manual labor. Duties include, but are not limited to: Trim, shape, cut, and remove trees, stumps, shrubs and other plant materials; repair limb or trunk fractures; install andplant trees, shrubs and plant materials; repair roadway grass strips and landscape areas; treat, spray and fertilize trees,shrubbery and plant materials. Assist with all Public Works programs such as sand barrel placement, street lighting, and other public or privateprojects such as holiday lighting and decorations. May also perform work in other Public Works Divisions as needed. General Duties (Duties are illustrative and not all inclusive): Responsible for the maintaining vehicle, including daily cleaning, safety and maintenance checks, which includes suchitems as items as follows, but is not limited to these items: fuel, oil, lubricant, water/coolant, hydraulic and other fluids,tires, batteries, brakes, lighting, and other systems. Maintain vehicle cleaning, safety and maintenance records andreport maintenance and repair requirements to supervisor. Coordinates, cooperates, and works with operators, laborers, and other personnel, performing all tasks assigned orrequired in a complete and workmanlike manner. Responsible for compliance with instructions, safety procedures, conformance with accepted trade practices, andcompliance with department policies and regulations and government laws and regulations as they pertain to the work; Installs and assists in the installation and attachment of varies equipment attachments. Operates all assigned vehicles and equipment. Perform assigned or required tasks and work both at and/or below grade. Respond sensitively and constructively to citizen complaints. Must be available for mandatory overtime during snow, ice, rain, windstorm, or any other urgent or emergency situation, and for any other public works duties required. Conduct other work as directed by the supervisor. Respond sensitively and constructively to citizen complaints; provide customer service with tact, courtesy, cultural sensitivity and discretion in all dealings with customers. Contribute to creating a collaborative work culture that appreciates diverse perspective and approaches matters with flexibility and cultural relevance.
Qualifications:
Education, experience or training in tree planting, trimming and removal. Punctual, reliable and regular attendance is required. Must possess a current, valid, and unrestricted Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License and a driving record which proves responsible and lawful driving habits and Public Safety Hoisting Engineering License that allows operation of any motor driven equipment or vehicle. Must demonstrate sufficient skills and ability to operate all of the public works vehicle types, including the equipment and attachments normally associated with the use of these vehicles in a public works environment. Must demonstrate ability to identify various elements of vehicles electrical and mechanical systems and be able to recognize and diagnose various equipment defects. Must have the ability to pass a Criminal Record Offender Information check. Must be in compliance with the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace policy. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and customer service orientation, demonstrated experience providing customer service to co-workers and residents, and the public using tact, proper judgment, courtesy, respect and discretion. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies and ensure a culturally relevant and sensitive approach. The department values adaptability, diverse perspective and the ability to collaborate and appreciate other's viewpoints.
Physical Demands:
While performing this job the employee must climb trees, stairs and ladders; enter confined spaces and travel in cramped, elevated and remote locations; and operate power and hand tools, equipment and machinery. The employee is required to sit, stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, crouch, twist, taste and smell. The employee is required to hear, feel and talk and speak English. The employee must have close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must have full use of hands, arms and legs. The employee is required to regularly lift heavy objects up to 60 pounds and carry these objects short distances. The employee must have the ability to work safely under difficult work situations performing heavy laborious tasks and during inclement weather conditions including high heat and high humidity, freezing temperatures, rain, snow, wind and ice storms; and under extended periods of sleep deprivation.
