Job Description
Animal Care Coordinator I Full disclosure: This is a demanding, hands-on role that requires consistency, accountability, and a strong work ethic. Animal Care Coordinators are responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the shelter by ensuring the health, safety, and overall well-being of the animals in our care. This position requires a dependable, accountable individual who can work effectively within a team environment and maintain consistent performance in a fast-paced setting. Due to the nature of shelter operations, reliability and teamwork are essential. Staff must be present, engaged, and able to contribute to maintaining high standards of animal care and facility cleanliness at all times.
Minimum Experience Requirement:
Applicants must have at least one year of hands-on experience working with animals in a professional setting (such as a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, kennel, or similar environment). Personal pet ownership does not qualify as professional experience. Applications lacking clear, relevant experience will not be considered. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Maintain clean and sanitary conditions by thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting kennels, animal housing areas, and equipment Provide daily care including feeding, watering, and basic grooming according to individual animal needs Monitor animals for changes in behavior, appetite, or health and promptly report concerns Assist with administering medications under direction from veterinary or leadership staff Support intake processes, including initial assessments and vaccinations Accurately document animal records using shelter management systems Assist with adoptions, reunifications, and general public interactions Respond to phone calls and assist visitors with professionalism and courtesy Maintain inventory of supplies and support general facility upkeep Safely transport animals to veterinary appointments, partner organizations, or events as needed Handle animals of varying temperaments, including those that may be fearful, stressed, or reactive, using approved safety protocols Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent required Minimum of one year of professional animal care experience Ability to safely handle both dogs and cats and interpret basic animal behavior Strong attention to detail and ability to communicate effectively with team members Physically capable of lifting up to 75 pounds and remaining active throughout the shift Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays Valid driver's license with reliable transportation Work Environment This position operates in a busy shelter environment that can be physically and emotionally demanding. Employees should be comfortable working in conditions that may include: High noise levels Exposure to cleaning agents and animal waste Handling animals with varying medical or behavioral needs Success in this role requires resilience, compassion, and the ability to work collaboratively under pressure. Additional Requirements Must be able to follow established safety and animal handling procedures Must be dependable and maintain consistent attendance Weekend availability is required Holidays are shared among the teamPay:
