  • In Training will train side by side with the current lead and Shelter Director, learning about animal behavior, animal husbandry, proper adherence to national guidelines and sanitation standards.
The Animal Care Team Lead oversees Animal Care Staff as shift supervisor. Performs as role model and leader. Assist Shelter Manager in achieving daily objectives for animal care and adoptions and providing support to Animal Care Staff in day-to-day care and maintenance of enclosures and kennels. Responsibilities Lead Animal Care Staff in daily routines, including but not limited to: Perform daily duties and responsibilities of Animal Care Staff, including, but not limited to, cleaning, feeding and handling animals, performing intake exams, administering vaccinations and medications, facilitating customer needs including adoptions, lost and found assistance and more, and performing other duties as assigned. Ensure that Animal Care Staff performs at highest level while adhering to standard operating procedures and established best practices in animal husbandry and sheltering. Ensure cleanliness and organization of the shelter. Oversee and participate in training/mentoring of all Animal Care Staff and volunteers. Actively work to maintain high team morale while fostering individual growth and development. Ensure supplies are properly stocked, including, but not limited to, animal food, animal litter, kennel/cattery supplies, and cleaning supplies. Assist shelter leadership and veterinary personnel in achieving daily objectives for animal care, supporting high quality animal health, and addressing medical and behavioral concerns. Seek out learning opportunities and continued education to continuously improve quality of care Serve as liaison between shelter management and animal care staff. Assist shelter leadership in evaluation and discipline of Animal Care Staff Identify and report maintenance/repair issues to Shelter Manager. Demonstrate core values of organization in all actions and interactions, internal and external. Provide prompt, exemplary customer service and facilitate good experience for all shelter guests. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned. Experience High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer a minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible and hands-on experience in an animal welfare environment. Experience must include handling domestic animals. Experience supervising and training staff and building a collaborative and effective team environment. Ability to effectively supervise the operation and duties of the animal shelter. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others encountered in the work place. Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted regularly, 50+ pounds assisted and perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including but not limited to: lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, standing, and bending. Comfortable regularly working with cats, dogs, and small animals. Due to nature of shelter work, may be exposed to deceased, fractious, or aggressive animals; hostile or irate persons; zoonotic or other diseases; unpleasant noises, odors, or sights; and extreme temperatures. Availability and willingness to work weekends and/or holidays; answer staff questions on an "on call" basis, and attend mandatory training and meetings as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its organizational needs. Maintain a valid driver's license and be insurable by shelter insurance. Able to drive own vehicle as needed. Highly skilled in interacting with the general public and ability to communicate well both orally and in writing. Demonstrates effective listening skills. Able to deliver friendly, professional and respectful service to others. Have operating knowledge of Microsoft Word, email, social media platforms, and able to learn shelter software system.
