You stage the site, set up equipment, and coordinate with incoming trucks so material arrives exactly when the paver needs it. You light burners, bring heating units online, set screed temperatures, and fine-tune flow rates so the mat stays consistent. As you guide the paver and maintain steady feed into the hopper and screed, you watch the head of material, call out low spots, and adjust machine settings to achieve the specified grade. Through the shift, you operate oil distributors, loaders, and dump trucks as needed. You compact earth fills and finished road materials with tampers or by rolling. You shovel blacktop when the handwork matters, fill tanks and hoppers, and, when required, cut or break pavement with interchangeable hammer attachments. You also run equipment to clean or cut expansion joints and rout out cracks for repairs. When the work moves, you load machines onto trailers and drive trucks to and from the site. As the day wraps up, you clean down equipment, tear down safely, and store everything securely. You calculate and order material for upcoming work, lay out parking stalls for paint, and brief your supervisor on maintenance or repair needs. Throughout it all, you wear PPE, follow procedures, and keep safety front and center—then lend a hand with any other duties the job calls for.
