Grade Crewman Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and dependable Operator / Grade Crewman to join our construction team. This position is responsible for performing excavation, grading, asphalt and concrete demolition, equipment operation, and asphalt paving work on a variety of projects. The ideal candidate will have strong experience operating excavators and grading equipment, reading elevations, hauling equipment, and working as part of an asphalt paving crew. This role requires a hands-on individual who can both lead by example and take direction from upper management to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to company standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Equipment Operation & Grading:
Operate excavators safely and efficiently for excavation, grading, demolition, and site preparation activities. Perform asphalt and concrete demolition using excavators and related attachments. Excavate, place, and fine grade dirt, gravel, and aggregate materials to required specifications. Operate motor graders for site preparation, road construction, and finish grading. Read and maintain grade elevations using laser levels, grade sticks, and other grading equipment. Verify site grades and elevations to ensure compliance with project requirements.
Transportation & Equipment Maintenance:
Load, secure, and transport heavy equipment using trucks and trailers. Safely drive truck and trailer combinations to and from project sites. Conduct daily equipment inspections and complete pre-trip and post-trip checks. Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on excavators and other assigned equipment. Report equipment issues and coordinate repairs as needed to minimize downtime.
Asphalt Operations:
Assist with the installation of hot mix asphalt on paving projects. Perform asphalt raking, lute work, rolling, and finishing to achieve quality results. Support paving crews in maintaining production goals and project schedules. Assist with site preparation, material placement, and cleanup activities.
Leadership & Teamwork:
Lead crew activities when assigned and provide support and guidance to fellow team members. Take direction from supervisors and upper management to ensure efficient project execution. Communicate effectively with project managers, foremen, and crew members regarding project progress and jobsite needs. Promote a positive, professional, and safety-focused work environment.
Qualifications:
Minimum 3-5 years of experience in excavation, grading, asphalt paving, or related construction work. Proficient in operating excavators and motor graders. Experience with asphalt and concrete demolition. Ability to read and maintain elevations using laser levels, grade sticks, and grading equipment. Experience loading, securing, and hauling heavy equipment with truck and trailer combinations. Knowledge of asphalt paving, compaction, and finishing techniques. Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform routine equipment maintenance. Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Physically capable of performing demanding outdoor construction work.
Work Environment:
Primarily outdoor work on active construction and paving sites. Exposure to weather, dust, noise, heavy equipment, and moving machinery. Requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, and working on uneven terrain for extended periods. Flexibility to work early mornings, extended hours, and occasional weekends during peak construction season.
