We specialize in outdoor construction and residential improvement projects including decks, covered and screened porches, fencing, remodeling, roofing, and related work. We are looking for an experienced Lead Carpenter / Residential Construction Field Manager who can become a key part of our company as we grow. This is not an entry-level carpenter or general labor position. We are looking for someone with real residential construction experience who is comfortable working independently, solving problems in the field, leading subcontractors, communicating with homeowners, and taking responsibility for the quality and progress of a project. The right person will initially work closely with the owner to learn our standards, systems, and expectations. As trust and experience develop, the goal is for this person to independently manage the day-to-day field operations of our projects. What You'll Be Doing Lead and oversee residential construction projects from start through completion Perform skilled carpentry and construction work when needed Manage and coordinate subcontractors and other trades on the jobsite Read project scopes, plans, measurements, and material lists Lay out and construct decks, porches, stairs, railings, framing, and other residential projects Identify construction issues and develop practical solutions in the field Maintain high standards for workmanship, safety, cleanliness, and customer property Inspect subcontractor work and make sure it meets company standards Keep projects moving efficiently and communicate delays or problems promptly Coordinate material needs and occasional supplier pickups Communicate professionally with homeowners regarding normal jobsite questions and project progress Provide the owner with progress updates, photos, material needs, and any issues requiring approval Complete punch-list items and ensure projects are ready for final customer walkthroughs Help develop better processes and systems as the company grows What We're Looking For We are primarily looking for experience, judgment, reliability, and craftsmanship.
Ideal candidates will have:
Several years of hands-on residential carpentry or construction experience Strong framing and general carpentry skills Experience with decks, porches, stairs, railings, remodeling, or similar residential work Ability to accurately measure, lay out, cut, assemble, and troubleshoot construction projects Ability to recognize poor workmanship and correct it Experience leading a crew, subcontractors, or other trades is strongly preferred Ability to work independently without constant supervision Strong communication and problem-solving skills Professional appearance and attitude when working around homeowners Good organizational and time-management skills Valid driver's license and reliable transportation Ability to safely lift and handle typical construction materials and equipment Willingness to travel between jobsites throughout the Birmingham metro and surrounding counties You do not need to know everything on day one. We are looking for someone with a strong construction foundation who is willing to learn how we operate and grow into greater responsibility. Pay $22-$28 per hour, based on experience and ability. There is significant opportunity for increased responsibility and compensation for someone who demonstrates the ability to independently manage projects and field operations. Travel This is an on-the-road construction position with work performed at customer properties rather than at a permanent office. Projects are located throughout the Birmingham metro and surrounding areas, including Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Bibb, Tuscaloosa, and nearby counties. Who Will Do Well in This Position This position is ideal for an experienced carpenter who enjoys building but is ready for more responsibility and wants the opportunity to move into a leadership role. We want someone who can eventually arrive at a project, understand what needs to happen, organize the work, manage the people involved, solve normal construction problems, maintain our quality standards, and keep the project moving without needing the owner on the jobsite all day. We are a small and growing company, so this position has considerably more opportunity for advancement and responsibility than a typical carpenter position.
