The Carpenter Senior reports to the Facilities Assistant Director at Phoenix College and plays a key role in maintaining and enhancing campus facilities through skilled, journey-level carpentry work. This position supports a wide range of construction, repair, and preventative maintenance activities, as well as remodeling and new construction projects, all while ensuring compliance with safety standards and building codes. Serving as a lead resource, the Carpenter interprets blueprints, coordinates project work, and provides guidance to ensure quality and efficiency.

Possession of a valid State of Arizona Driver License (Class D) may be required for some assignments

Required licenses and certifications must be maintained for the duration of employment within the classification. Licenses and certifications may be subject to renewal and/or require Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or training by the State or issuing authority.

Essential Functions

40%

• Performs journey-level carpentry work, including rough, finish, and specialized projects using wood and other materials.

Performs preventative maintenance and general repairs on facilities and structures. Follows all safety procedures, building codes, and regulations, including proper use of tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Operates, maintains, and ensures proper care of carpentry tools and equipment.

• Provides lead oversight of carpentry work, including construction, alteration, maintenance, and repair of structures and components. Reads and interprets blueprints, drawings, and specifications to plan and complete assigned projects. Assigns and monitors the work of others.

• Performs remodeling and new construction in assigned areas, including reconfiguring or removing walls and doorways, and installing or repairing drywall and suspended ceilings.

• Performs locksmithing duties, including key creation and tracking in Keystone.
  10%
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and five (5) years of carpentry work experience equivalent to a journey-level. OR

An Associate's degree or certification from a regionally accredited institution in construction technology, or a related discipline, and three (3) years of carpentry work experience equivalent to a journey-level. OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

T is no substitution or equivalency allowable for the High School Diploma or GED.

Desired Qualifications

1. Experience providing lead oversight for carpentry work, including coordinating assignments and/or ensuring quality completion of projects.

2. Experience working with solid surface materials in construction, repair, or installation projects.

3. Experience using SchoolDude, TeamDynamix, or similar computerized maintenance management systems to manage and track work orders.

4. Demonstrated locksmithing certification and/or experience with keying systems and tracking (e.g., Keystone).

5. Experience performing maintenance or construction work in a higher education or similarly complex institutional environment.

6. One (1) year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two (2) years.

ADA AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, typing, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work:

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments with frequent exposure to a variety of weather conditions, for short or long durations, including rain, wind, dust, cold temperatures and extreme desert heat. Work may include moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, fumes, fuels, odors, poor ventilation, gasses, blood or other body fluids). Some indoor work environments may not be air conditioned. Work may involve frequent exposure to loud noise associated with tools or carpentry work and require the use of hand and power tools. Work may require the use of ladders, scaffolding, or similar equipment, working at heights with safety harnesses or other safety measures. Some work may be performed in an office/computer workstation and require the use of a computer and keyboard for training, to check emails, and/or communicate with coworkers and supervision. This classification may require that an incumbent be on their feet, standing or walking while performing duties, for the majority, if not all, of a work shift.

Travel and Work Schedule:

Travel to various locations at an assigned college or within the District is required. Schedules may consist of shift work, including nights, weekends, holidays, or otherwise non-standard work schedules.
