Smithouse is a full-service residential Design + Build firm providing clients with a positive building experience through sound planning, design, and project management practices. Both creative and solution-oriented, the Smithouse team, comprised of a select mix of building experts, designers, and master craftsmen, makes visions and dreams a reality for their clients.

Full-time/Non-Exempt Summary The Carpenter position at Smithouse requires a multi-talented individual. The carpenter effectively completes hands-on production and managerial tasks, is proficient in various carpentry techniques, possesses a strong work ethic, and is committed to producing high-quality work. This role involves working on diverse projects, from framing and structural work ot fo finish carpentry and custom installation. The carpenter consistently meets the Company Carpentry Principles and understands basic managerial concepts and methods necessary for supervision and coordination of labor forces on individual projects. Key Responsibilities Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements. Measure, cut, shape, assemble, and join materials such as wood, plastic, fiberglass, and drywall. Install structures and fixtures, such as windows, doors, frames, floorings, and trim. Build or repair cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, and other wooden fixtures. Erect scaffolding and ladders as needed, ensuring safety protocols are followed. Inspect and replace damaged framework or other structures and fixtures. Collaborate with other construction professionals, including electricians, plumbers, and general contractors. Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Operate hand and power tools safely and efficiently. Estimate material and labor costs for projects. Detail:
Carpenters pay close attention to detail to ensure precise measurements and accurate construction.
Problem-Solving Skills:
They can troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during construction.
Teamwork and Communication:
Carpenters often work as part of a team and need to communicate effectively with other tradespeople and project managers. Minimum 5 years' experience in residential construction General knowledge of all facets of residential construction, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, insulation, roofing, siding, drywall, and interiors
High School Diploma or Equivalent:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Driver's License Physical Requirements & Stamina Strength and Stamina:
Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds frequently. Ability to push, pull, and maneuver heavy objects and equipment. Ability to stand, walk, and move around for extended periods throughout the workday, both indoors and outdoors, potentially in varying weather conditions common to Maryland (e.g., heat, humidity in summer; cold in winter). Sufficient physical stamina to perform tasks over a full workday, including repetitive movements.
Dexterity and Coordination:
Good hand-eye coordination for using tools and equipment safely and effectively. Manual dexterity to manipulate small objects and perform intricate tasks. Ability to maintain balance while working on uneven surfaces or in awkward positions.
Mobility and Flexibility:
Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb ladders or stairs frequently. Full range of motion in the upper and lower body to reach, grasp, and lift. Ability to work in confined spaces as needed.
Vision and Hearing:
Normal or corrected vision to see details, read instructions, and assess work quality. Normal or corrected hearing is needed to communicate effectively with the Site Supervisor or Carpenter and clients and to hear potential safety hazards.
Environmental Considerations:
Potential exposure to various environmental conditions, including dust, dirt, noise, and temperature variations. May be required to work outdoors in different weather conditions prevalent in Maryland. May involve exposure to cleaning chemicals and other materials (with proper safety precautions).
