Job Description

Why Building House? Building House is raising the bar for residential construction in the Hudson Valley. We design and build architecturally significant, high-performance homes that combine real craftsmanship with cutting-edge building science. Our projects range from new construction to deep energy retrofits, and we're always pushing the envelope with the best materials and methods. We're a small, growing team that takes pride in the work. We're looking for someone who can take ownership of projects, lead a crew, and uphold the standard of quality our clients expect. The Role We need an experienced Lead Carpenter to run projects from start to finish. You'll manage the day-to-day on site, coordinate with subs, keep the crew productive, and make sure every detail meets our standard. This is a hands-on leadership role — you're swinging a hammer and making calls. What You'll Do
  • Run job sites from layout to punch list — framing, trim, finish, the works
  • Read and execute architectural plans and building details accurately
  • Manage and mentor crew members, keeping the team motivated and productive
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, inspectors, and clients on-site
  • Keep projects on schedule and on budget, flagging issues early
  • Maintain a clean, safe, organized job site at all times
  • Document project progress and communicate updates to the team
  • Problem-solve on the fly — construction never goes exactly as planned What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of carpentry experience, with a track record of leading crews on builds and renovations
  • Solid knowledge of building codes, construction best practices, and job site safety (OSHA familiarity expected)
  • You can read plans, manage timelines, and keep a project moving without someone looking over your shoulder
  • Strong communication skills — with clients, crew, and trade partners
  • Attention to detail. The quality of our work is what sets us apart
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Interest in high-performance building, passive house principles, or building science is a major plus What You Get
  • Competitive pay ($40
  • 55/hr)
  • Paid holidays and sick days
  • Yearly bonus
  • Tool stipend
  • Access to best-in-class tools, equipment, vans, and our shop in Saugerties
  • Continuing education — PHIUS Tradesman Certification, lead carpenter training, and more
  • A real leadership role with autonomy, not just a title
  • Work on projects that actually matter — high-performance homes, not cookie-cutter builds
