Job Description

The City of Pierre seeks a passionate individual to join our team in making Pierre one of the best places to live, work, and visit. This position performs carpentry duties in the construction, repair, and maintenance of city facilities. Carpenter PR-PK/5 Parks and Recreation - Parks
JOB SUMMARY
This position performs carpentry duties in the construction, repair, and maintenance of parks facilities.
MAJOR DUTIES
Plans, builds, maintains, and repairs concession stands, shade structures, storage buildings, playground equipment, etc. Performs carpentry construction and repair on other city buildings and facilities. Repairs furniture, replaces doors, and windows, installs drop ceilings, etc. Remodels bathrooms and offices. Requisitions supplies and materials. Installs and repairs fencing. Paints interior and exterior surfaces. Forms and pours concrete. Installs backstop netting and safety netting at sports fields. Repairs bleachers and other structures. Maintains tools and equipment. Assists with snow removal. Hangs and finishes sheetrock. Assists in installing holiday and seasonal decorations. Assists with grounds maintenance as needed, including repairing irrigation systems, planting and removing trees, mowing grass, trimming weeds, etc. Performs plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair. Attendance is an essential function of this position. Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of carpentry principles and practices. Knowledge of roof repair and maintenance principles. Knowledge of painting tools, supplies, and techniques. Knowledge of building codes. Knowledge of concrete finishing. Skill in drafting and developing plans. Skill in using a transit for shooting elevation. Skill in the use of a variety of carpentry tools and equipment. Skill in the use of hand and power tools. Skill in the operation plow trucks, skid steer, and other equipment. Skill in problem solving. Skill in interpersonal relations. Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Parks Superintendent and Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include building codes and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related carpentry duties. Maintaining older structures contributes to the complexity of the work. The purpose of this position is to perform carpentry duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks facilities. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective maintenance of park facilities.
CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, vendors, contractors, and the general public. Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color. The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of South Dakota. Qualifications This position performs all aspects of carpentry work which includes compiling material lists and cost estimates for construction projects, pouring and finishing concrete, renovates interior and exterior walls, ceilings, and roofs, repairs furniture and builds cabinets, bookcases and shelves.
