Job Description
Position Summary The Heavy Civil Carpenter is responsible for constructing, installing, and dismantling concrete formwork and other structural components used in heavy civil construction projects. This position works on bridges, highways, tunnels, retaining walls, foundations, utility structures, and other infrastructure projects while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and productivity. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Build, install, align, and dismantle wood, metal, and engineered concrete form systems. Read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications. Measure, cut, shape, and assemble materials according to project requirements. Construct forms for footings, walls, columns, bridge decks, culverts, retaining walls, and other concrete structures. Install embeds, anchor bolts, chamfers, blockouts, and other form accessories. Assist with concrete placement, finishing, and curing operations. Perform layout work using measuring tools, levels, lasers, and string lines. Install and remove shoring, falsework, scaffolding, and temporary structures. Work around heavy equipment and coordinate activities with operators and other trades. Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with project specifications and quality standards. Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition. Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and site-specific requirements. Participate in daily safety meetings and job hazard analyses. Assist with general construction activities as needed to support project operations. Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. Minimum of 2 years of carpentry experience, preferably in heavy civil or concrete construction. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction plans. Knowledge of concrete formwork systems and construction methods. Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment. Strong understanding of construction safety practices. Valid driver's license preferred. Preferred Qualifications Experience in bridge construction, highway projects, utility structures, or large-scale concrete construction. OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification. Experience with gang forms, wall forms, bridge deck forms, and engineered form systems. Knowledge of rigging, signaling, and construction layout procedures. CPR and First Aid certification. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds frequently. Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch, and work in physically demanding environments. Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces when required. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to work overtime, weekends, and night shifts as needed. Work Environment Active heavy civil construction sites including bridges, highways, roadways, utility projects, and infrastructure developments. Exposure to noise, dust, vibration, heavy equipment, and changing weather conditions. Work may require travel to various project locations. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong carpentry and concrete formwork skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship. Ability to follow instructions and work independently when needed. Excellent safety awareness and hazard recognition skills. Reliable attendance and strong work ethic.
