WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We hire for character first. Craft can be sharpened; character is who someone already is. If you're a person people trust in their home, who teaches without ego, and who takes quiet pride in leaving a place better than you found it, we want to talk to you. The people who thrive here tend to be: Honest and accountable. You say what you'll do and then do it. You own mistakes early and out loud, and you tell us the truth about the work, good or bad. A teacher at heart. You're patient with trainees, you explain the why behind a cut or a method, and you'd rather build up a crew than prove you're the best on it. Steady and warm with clients. Homeowners are living through a disruption. You're calm, respectful, and easy to have around, and you treat their home like it's your grandmother's. Curious and respectful of history. You care about old houses and the people who built them. You slow down to save the original trim instead of tearing it out. Reliable and self-directed. You notice what needs doing and do it. You're the same person on a rainy Friday as on a sunny Monday. Humble and open. You speak up about safety, ask questions when unsure, and welcome feedback, including from the people you lead.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Carpenter runs the jobsite day to day on historic restoration and high-end remodel projects. You are the face of GR Taylor Homes to our clients and the example for our crew. You set the tone, protect the quality and safety of the work, and develop Carpenter I trainees into skilled carpenters. You will do hands-on carpentry, but the heart of this role is leadership: a well-run site, a confident crew, and a client who feels cared for. You will have real ownership of the work: lead your own site, shape your own crew, and grow with a company that values stewardship.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS LEADING THE CREW
Run the jobsite daily: plan the day, assign tasks, and keep the crew safe, busy, and on schedule. Write the job sequencing plan from the Job Playbook, review it with the Owner for approval, and work the playbook with the crew from start to finish. Train and mentor Carpenter I trainees. Explain methods, check work, give timely and kind feedback, and report their progress to the Owner.
Model the company culture:
respectful language, punctuality, tidy habits, and honest communication. Raise problems early, including schedule risks, material shortages, and crew concerns, rather than hiding them.
CARPENTRY AND PRODUCTION
Perform and direct rough framing, exterior work, and interior finish carpentry to company standards. Lead selective and general demolition, including protection and salvage of designated historic materials. Confirm lead and asbestos clearance before demolition on pre-1978 structures. Read plans and scope documents, lay out the work, and prepare cut lists for the crew. Spot-check and sign off on crew work before it is covered or finished; correct rework quickly. Where a task is outside your experience, say so, ask, and learn it. Honest about limits is a strength here.
SITE OPERATIONS
Coordinate material deliveries, verify against packing slips, and report discrepancies the same day. Ensure floor and surface protection, dust containment, and negative-air setups are in place in occupied homes. Keep the site clean, secure, and organized at the end of every day. Keep tools and trailers maintained and stocked.
SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE
Hold yourself and the crew to all company and
WISHA/OSHA
safety requirements, including fall protection, ladder and scaffold safety, PPE, and silica and lead-dust controls. Lead daily safety awareness on site. Ensure any injury, near-miss, or property damage is reported to the Owner the same day. Complete the daily fall protection form and deliver the weekly toolbox talk from the company safety program.
CLIENT CONDUCT AND DOCUMENTATION
Be the primary on-site point of contact for clients: greet them, update them on progress, and answer day-to-day questions with courtesy. Bring any change in scope, schedule, or cost to the Owner before committing. Do not quote work or promise changes on your own. Ensure daily progress photographs (in CompanyCam) and daily log notes are completed and submitted. Uphold professional conduct in occupied homes: no smoking on site, no profanity within earshot of clients or neighbors, clean appearance, and respectful use of music.
DRIVING:
Operate a vehicle to travel between jobsites, the shop, suppliers, and the transfer station, and make material and supply runs as needed. A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record are essential functions of this position. Travel time beyond the normal commute to a jobsite is paid time, and out-of-town jobs may run on an adjusted schedule.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Eighteen years of age or older. Legally authorized to work in the United States. Form I-9 verification required. Valid driver's license and an insurable driving record. Reliable transportation to the shop or jobsite. Five or more years of carpentry experience, including framing and finish work, and the ability to help lead a crew. We will assess skill through a paid working interview. Own work boots and basic hand tools. Ability to communicate clearly in English regarding safety instructions and work direction. Willingness to sign the company's Confidentiality and Non-Solicitation Agreement as a condition of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
None of these are required. If you don't have them but have the character described above, please apply. Experience working in occupied homes or on historic structures. Existing EPA RRP certification or OSHA 10 card.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee must be able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to: Lift and carry 50 lbs repeatedly throughout the day, and occasionally assist with loads up to 100 lbs with a second person. Stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, and climb for eight or more hours per day. Work from ladders, scaffolding, and elevated surfaces at height. Work outdoors in Spokane conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wildfire smoke. Work in confined and restricted spaces, including crawlspaces and attics. Use vibrating and pneumatic tools for extended periods. Tolerate exposure to dust, sawdust, adhesives, solvents, paint, and demolition debris with appropriate
PPE. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$38 to $45 per hour, depending on experience. Non-exempt; overtime paid at 1.5x for hours over 40 in a workweek. Paid time off, accrued at one hour per 26 hours worked (80 hours per year) and available for use after 90 days of employment. Washington Paid Sick Leave, accrued at one hour per forty hours worked and available for use after 90 days of employment. Company-provided power tools, consumables, and trailers. Paid holidays, employer-sponsored health insurance, and retirement benefits are not offered at this time. Recognized holidays are unpaid days off.
PERFORMANCE BENCHMARKS
FIRST 30 DAYS Reliable attendance and on-time arrival. Learns the company's standards, crew, and clients, and asks good questions. Runs a safe, organized, clean site and sets the daily tone for the crew. Builds a respectful working relationship with each trainee.
BY 90 DAYS
Runs a project site day to day with only Owner check-ins. Clients report feeling informed and comfortable with the crew in their home. Daily photographs and log notes are submitted consistently, by you and your crew.
BY 12 MONTHS
Crew members are visibly progressing in skill and confidence. Work meets company finish standards with minimal rework. Trusted to lead a project from demolition through finish with spot-checks only. Recognized by clients and teammates as someone they'd want on the next job. Tell us a little about your experience and the kind of work you take pride in.
