- MU5200 Job Description The Carpenter Lead is responsible for performing skilled carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, repair, and alteration of building structures and facilities, utilizing established procedures and techniques of the carpentry trade.
This position provides day-to-day guidance, direction, and support to the carpentry team to ensure quality workmanship, safe practices, and timely completion of assignments. The Carpenter Lead also assists with planning, assigning, and reviewing work, and assumes shop management responsibilities in the absence of the Shop Manager to ensure continuity of operations. Additional responsibilities include practicing preventive maintenance of carpentry tools and equipment, complying with federal safety and environmental regulations, properly handling hazardous materials, and ensuring work and repairs are completed in accordance with work orders or verbal instructions.
Certifications:
- Valid driver's license which must be maintained during employment.
- High school diploma or
GED Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of carpentry methods and practices typically obtained through completion of at least 18 months of technical or vocational education beyond high school.
- Knowledge of local, state and federal building codes.
- Mathematical skills.
- Basic computer skills
- Demonstrates requirements of safety and exhibits good safety habits.
- Legally and safely operates University vehicles while picking up or delivering parts and equipment by obeying applicable traffic laws and following operator instructions.
- Good hand and eye coordination.
- Understands and demonstrates proper and safe operation of tools and machinery.
- Demonstrates quality of making sure that jobs are properly completed on schedule.
- Ability to independently complete tasks with minimal supervision.
- Analyzes and fixes problems in a manner which results in minimal downtime.
- Understanding Safety Data Sheet ( SDS ) requirements and is familiar with location and use of SDS information.
- Ability to bring up potential solutions to problems when they arise. Uses knowledge and experience to identify and ultimately solve problems that are affecting equipment/process performance.
- Available work after hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Employees in this job classification (job title) are designated as essential employees and must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed or delayed.
- Communicates well utilizing both written and oral instructions.
- Works safely off ladders, scaffolding, and various man lifts.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods, climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.
- Able to work in inclement weather conditions. And in hot or cold environments.
- Ability to read, follow and interpret safety rules and guidelines.
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials common to the carpentry trade.

Required Qualifications Education High School Diploma/ GED . Experience 3 years experience in Carpentry or building construction, renovation, or maintenance. Preferred Qualifications Education Completion of a vocational, technical, or apprenticeship program in carpentry, construction, or a related trade.
