Job Description

Overview J C Compton Enterprises Inc. is seeking an experienced Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Supervisor to oversee underground utility construction crews and ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to company and customer standards. This position is responsible for supervising daily field operations, coordinating crews and equipment, maintaining production goals, and ensuring compliance with all safety and utility locating requirements. The ideal candidate has strong underground construction knowledge, leadership experience, and the ability to manage multiple job sites while maintaining quality workmanship and productivity. Responsibilities Supervise and coordinate daily activities of HDD crews, operators, laborers, and subcontractors Oversee directional drilling operations for underground utility installation projects Ensure crews are working safely and following company policies, OSHA standards, and utility requirements Conduct and participate in pre-construction meetings and daily job briefings Monitor production, footage installed, and project progress to maintain schedules and deadlines Coordinate with project management regarding schedules, material needs, traffic control, and field conditions Verify all required locates, blue stake markings, and permits are in place prior to excavation or drilling Troubleshoot field issues including utility conflicts, bore path challenges, equipment issues, and restoration concerns Ensure accurate field documentation including as-builts, production reports, and daily crew updates Inspect work quality and ensure installations meet customer specifications and company standards Manage equipment usage and communicate maintenance or repair needs Train and mentor crew members while maintaining accountability and productivity Maintain communication with inspectors, customers, municipalities, and utility representatives as needed Assist with emergency response or after-hours work when required Qualifications Previous experience supervising HDD or underground utility construction crews required Strong knowledge of directional drilling operations, bore planning, and underground utility installation Ability to read prints, utility maps, and construction plans Knowledge of utility locating practices and underground safety procedures Experience coordinating multiple crews and job sites preferred Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills Valid driver's license required CDL preferred but not required Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions Ability to lift 50+ lbs and perform physical job duties as needed Preferred Experience Telecommunications underground construction experience Experience with fiber optic utility installation Knowledge of restoration and traffic control requirements Experience operating HDD equipment is a plus Benefits Competitive pay based on experience Company vehicle (if applicable) Opportunity for growth within a rapidly expanding company Health benefits/PTO (customize as needed) Stable, long-term work opportunities J C Compton Enterprises, Inc. is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
