About the Position We are seeking an experienced Excavation Manager to lead our sewer and underground utility excavation operations throughout Central Illinois. This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for managing excavation crews, coordinating jobs, maintaining safety and quality standards, managing equipment, and ensuring projects are completed efficiently and profitably. The ideal candidate has strong experience with sewer line excavation, underground utilities, trench safety, heavy equipment, and crew leadership . We are looking for someone who can take ownership of the excavation department and keep jobs moving safely from excavation through final completion. Responsibilities Manage and oversee daily sewer and underground utility excavation operations. Supervise excavation crews, operators, laborers, and field personnel. Coordinate daily job schedules, equipment, materials, and manpower. Review jobs before excavation to identify access issues, utilities, equipment requirements, and potential safety concerns. Ensure underground utilities are properly located before excavation begins. Enforce OSHA excavation and trench safety requirements. Ensure proper use of trench boxes, shoring, sloping, benching, ladders, and other protective systems. Perform or oversee required competent-person excavation inspections. Stop work immediately when unsafe excavation or trench conditions exist. Ensure spoil piles, equipment, and materials are properly positioned around excavations. Monitor weather, groundwater, soil conditions, and other changing excavation hazards. Coordinate sewer line repairs and replacements with plumbing personnel. Ensure proper pipe installation, bedding, connections, backfill, compaction, and grading. Coordinate inspections and permit requirements when applicable. Maintain communication with customers, office staff, managers, plumbers, inspectors, and other contractors. Monitor job progress and keep projects on schedule. Review job costs, labor hours, materials, equipment usage, and overall job profitability. Minimize unnecessary overtime, equipment downtime, and material waste. Inspect completed work for quality before jobs are closed. Ensure job sites are cleaned, secured, and restored appropriately. Manage maintenance and readiness of excavators, skid steers, trailers, trench boxes, pumps, compactors, and other excavation equipment. Train and develop excavation employees. Hold crews accountable for safety, quality, productivity, and professionalism. Assist with hiring and evaluating excavation personnel. Respond to job-site problems and make sound field decisions when conditions change. Qualifications 3-5 years of excavation experience required , preferably involving sewer, water, plumbing, or underground utilities. Previous crew leader, foreman, supervisor, or management experience strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of trenching and excavation safety. Experience operating and working around excavators, mini excavators, skid steers, loaders, compactors, and similar equipment. Understanding of underground utility locating and safe digging practices. Ability to read site plans, measurements, grades, and utility information. Understanding of sewer line installation, pitch, bedding, backfill, and compaction. Strong leadership and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple crews and jobs simultaneously. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and job-site conditions. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. OSHA excavation/trenching Competent Person training preferred. You must be able to lead people, enforce safety requirements, solve problems in the field, communicate with customers and management, and make sure every project is completed correctly. You should be comfortable walking onto a job site, evaluating the excavation, identifying potential problems, developing a plan, assigning the right people and equipment, and seeing the project through to completion. Safety Is a Major Part of This Position Our excavation crews perform work that can involve deep sewer trenches and significant underground hazards. The Excavation Manager is expected to make trench and excavation safety a top priority. This includes ensuring required protective systems are in place, conducting job-site inspections, identifying changing conditions, and making sure no employee enters an unsafe or improperly protected excavation . The Excavation Manager has the authority and responsibility to stop work whenever an unsafe condition exists. Compensation & Benefits Competitive compensation based on experience.
