Job Description

United Contractors Midwest (UCM) Earthwork Foreman - Job Description Summary The Earthwork Foreman is responsible for overseeing and directing one or more field crews on earthwork projects to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project plans, specifications, and schedules. This role works closely with the Project Superintendent to execute daily operations, coordinate labor and equipment, and maintain productivity in the field. The Foreman plays a key leadership role in guiding UCM hourly employees and supporting overall project success. This role reports to Earthwork Superintendent. Why UCM? Responsibilities Oversee and lead one or multiple field crews on earthwork projects to ensure work is completed safely and efficiently Work closely with the Project Superintendent to coordinate daily activities and project priorities Direct and assign tasks to crew members, including equipment operators and laborers Coordinate the use of equipment, materials, and manpower to meet production goals Monitor work progress to ensure alignment with project plans, specifications, and schedules Review and interpret IDOT plans, specifications, and requirements to guide field operations Communicate effectively with UCM hourly employees to provide direction, support, and expectations Identify and help resolve field issues in a timely manner to avoid delays Promote and enforce company safety policies and maintain a safe work environment Adapt to changing jobsite conditions and assist with adjusting crew assignments as needed Work extended hours, including nights and weekends, as project demands require Travel to various job sites throughout Illinois as needed Use a personal pickup truck for jobsite travel, with reimbursement provided by UCM Preferred Qualifications Previous experience as a Foreman or in a supervisory role within heavy civil earthwork or highway construction Strong knowledge of earthwork operations including grading, excavation, and site preparation Familiarity with IDOT plans, specifications, and construction standards Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and project documents Experience leading crews and coordinating daily field operations Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to work effectively with field crews and management Ability to work in a fast paced, field-based environment with changing priorities Willingness to travel throughout Illinois as required Valid driver's license and reliable personal pickup truck Desired Characteristics Motivated, reliable, and self-driven Strong work ethic with a high level of accountability Detail oriented and organized in managing crew activities Effective communicator with strong listening skills Team oriented with a collaborative mindset Proactive, adaptable, and flexible in a fast-paced environment Problem solver with the ability to make decisions in the field Punctual and dependable Committed to safety and leading by example on the job site Benefits & Compensation UCM offers a compensation and benefits package designed to support our team: Competitive salary with bi-monthly pay and annual bonus opportunities 401(k) with company match up to 5% Company-paid life insurance, short-term, and long-term disability coverage Comprehensive health benefits including multiple medical plan options, prescription coverage, and wellness programs Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA) options Per diem for travel assignments (when applicable) Monthly vehicle reimbursement for business use Unlimited PTO and paid company holidays Office closure between Christmas and New Year Equal Employment Opportunity UCM is an Equal Opportunity Employer and provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other protected status under applicable law.
