This role owns daily production, safety, quality, and coordination, ensuring utility work is installed correctly, inspected cleanly, and delivered on schedule. Utility Installation Leadership Direct crews installing water, sewer, storm drain, force mains, services, and structures Lay out pipe runs, structure locations, invert elevations, and trench requirements Verify bedding, pipe grade, jointing, cover, and compaction meet project specs Manage trench boxes, shoring, and safe excavation practices Quality & Grade Control Check slopes, inverts, and alignments throughout installation Confirm compaction densities and backfill lifts Ensure materials (pipe, fittings, structures, valves) match submittals and plans Prep for inspections and walk with inspectors to resolve issues immediately Crew & Equipment Coordination Assign daily tasks and monitor production rates Coordinate excavators, loaders, compactors, pumps, and trench safety systems Anticipate material needs and coordinate deliveries Identify bottlenecks early and adjust manpower/equipment as needed Safety & Compliance Enforce OSHA trenching/excavation standards Conduct daily JHAs and safety briefings Monitor confined space, dewatering, traffic control, and equipment operation Document incidents, near misses, and corrective actions Communication & Reporting Serve as the primary field contact for PMs, inspectors, engineers, and other trades Communicate daily progress, issues, and upcoming needs Track quantities, crew hours, and equipment usage Document field conditions, delays, and changes affecting production Qualifications 3-7+ years of underground utility experience Strong understanding of pipe installation, trench safety, and grade control Ability to read civil plans, profiles, and utility details Competent with lasers, pipe levels, and layout tools Strong leadership and communication skills Valid driver's license; equipment operation experience preferred Physical Requirements Work outdoors in all weather Walk, climb, and work in uneven terrain Lift up to 50 lbs Comfortable working around heavy equipment and active trenches
