Skilled Laborer Job Description The Skilled Laborer supports daily production by handling materials, assisting with assembly, and performing a variety of general labor tasks across the shop. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, confidence using hand and power tools, the ability to read blueprints or a willingness to learn, and the flexibility to move between tasks as production needs change. The Skilled Laborer plays a key role in keeping projects moving efficiently, accurately, and safely in a busy fabrication and engineering environment. Responsibilities Load, unload, move, and stage materials using proper lifting techniques and material-handling equipment. Use hand and power tools to assemble components according to drawings, instructions, and production requirements. Read and interpret basic engineering drawings, blueprints, measurements, and layout requirements to complete tasks accurately. Measure materials precisely using tape measures, squares, and other measuring tools to ensure correct dimensions and fit. Support general shop operations by cleaning, organizing work areas, staging materials, and assisting fabricators as needed. Move between different work areas throughout the day to support multiple teams and changing production priorities. Safely operate drills, saws, grinders, and other shop tools in accordance with safety guidelines and best practices. Assist welders, fabricators, and technicians to keep production flowing smoothly and to meet project deadlines. Follow industrial safety practices and maintain a clean, orderly, and hazard-free work environment. Perform physical tasks such as standing, bending, lifting, and moving materials throughout the shift to support production needs. Essential Skills 1-3 years of experience in skilled labor, material handling, construction, or manufacturing. Ability to read and understand basic blueprints or a strong willingness to learn blueprint reading. Proficiency using hand tools and power tools for assembly and general shop tasks. Strong measurement skills with the ability to use tape measures, squares, and other measuring tools accurately. Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physically demanding tasks throughout the shift. Reliable, adaptable work style with the ability to perform in a fast-paced shop environment. General labor experience, including material handling, loading, and supporting production activities. Comfort working around tools, machinery, and in a production or construction-type setting. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in a fabrication or industrial environment. Forklift or material-handling equipment experience. Mechanical aptitude and interest in learning new skills such as plastics work, welding, and assembly. Familiarity with industrial safety practices and safe operation of shop equipment. Experience in machine operation or machine operating in a production environment. Experience in construction or production settings that involve hands-on labor and tool use. Why Work Here? Work Environment This is a full-time, onsite position in a fabrication and engineering shop. Typical work involves the use of hand tools, power tools, and material-handling equipment in a busy, industrial shop setting where practical work attire suitable for a fabrication environment is expected. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Montgomery, AL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $18.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
