Position Summary McLain Site Solutions is seeking an experienced Survey Crew Chief to lead our construction surveying team in performing accurate field surveys for heavy civil construction projects. This position is responsible for supervising survey crews, performing construction layouts, collecting and verifying field data, and ensuring all surveying activities meet project specifications. The ideal candidate has strong leadership skills, extensive construction layout experience, and proficiency with modern surveying equipment and technology. Essential Responsibilities Survey Operations Lead and supervise survey crews during daily field operations. Perform construction layout for site development, underground utilities, grading, roadways, building pads, and drainage systems. Conduct topographic surveys, as-built surveys, control surveys, and boundary surveys as required. Establish and verify project control points, benchmarks, offsets, and construction layouts. Verify grades, elevations, alignments, and utility locations according to project plans and specifications. Read and interpret construction plans, engineering drawings, utility profiles, and cut sheets. Ensure all survey work is completed accurately and on schedule. Equipment & Technology Operate and maintain GPS receivers, robotic total stations, data collectors, laser levels, and other surveying equipment. Perform equipment setup, calibration, and daily maintenance. Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate repairs when necessary. Maintain accurate electronic survey files and field notes. Project Coordination Coordinate survey activities with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, Project Engineers, and field crews. Provide layout information and survey support for construction operations. Communicate project progress, field issues, and layout needs management. Assist with quantity verification and project documentation. Leadership & Safety Train and mentor Survey Rodmen and survey crew members. Maintain productivity while ensuring quality standards are achieved. Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations. Conduct daily job hazard assessments and ensure proper PPE is worn. Promote a positive, professional, and safety-focused work environment. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Minimum 5 years of construction surveying or land surveying experience. Previous Survey Crew Chief or Lead Surveyor experience preferred. Strong knowledge of construction layout, grade control, and surveying principles. Proficiency with GPS receivers, robotic total stations, data collectors, and laser levels. Ability to read and interpret construction plans, engineering drawings, utility profiles, and civil site plans. Experience performing layout for underground utilities, site development, grading, roadways, and drainage systems. Strong understanding of coordinate systems, elevations, and construction staking. Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Preferred Experience with Trimble, Topcon, Leica, Carlson, or similar surveying equipment. Experience with machine control systems and GPS grade control. Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or surveying software. FAA Part 107 Drone License. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification. CPR/First Aid Certification. Heavy civil construction experience. Bilingual (English/Spanish). Physical Requirements Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Frequently walk long distances over uneven terrain and active construction sites. Lift and carry survey equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work around excavation activities. Work extended hours when required to meet project schedules. Work Environment This position is performed primarily on active construction sites. Employees regularly work around heavy equipment, excavation activities, moving machinery, dust, vibration, noise, and varying weather conditions. Required PPE must be worn at all times.Schedule Monday-Friday Typical hours:
7:00 AM - 5:00 PM One-hour unpaid lunch Overtime may be available based on project needs and business demands.
