Job Description
The Special Motor Equipment Operator/Laborer will work in the construction, maintenance, and operation of the Town's Public Works systems. Responsible for ensuring that all safety practices and measures, including but not limited to work zone safety, confined space entry and excavation safety are adhered to and that personal protective clothing and equipment are utilized. Operates motor equipment in a professional and competent manner and with care taken to perform the work safely and with efficiency. The incumbent is responsible for carrying out various assignments essential to the Public Works Department and shall have a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public works utility systems-related maintenance and some experience with installing and repairing asphalt and cement as well as snow removal. The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Operates heavy and unique construction or maintenance equipment such as a grader, bulldozer, crane, wheel type loader, log loader, backhoe, truck, crawler mounted backhoe, high capacity dump trucks or truck and trailer requiring a Commercial Drivers license. Respond to after hours emergencies as directed and assist in emergency response activities related to system failures and/or crises Digs, braces, backfills, and tampers excavations. Performs the installation and repair of any town owned utility including water mains, service valves, gates, hydrants, and other appurtenances using whatever methods, tools, and procedures are necessary to complete the task safely, properly, and proficiently. Operates heavy duty equipment for snow removal Read and follow specifications on engineering blueprints, sketches, and diagrams of the water and sewer system and other related operations systems. Locate, operate, repair, and maintain underground utilities and controls related to the public works infrastructure. Performs minor maintenance functions on equipment, including but not limited to checking and maintaining air pressures and fluid levels, lubrication of mechanical joints by applying necessary greases, and routine cleaning of vehicle exterior and interior. Performs tasks generally assigned to a laborer and/or skilled laborer Performs daily vehicle condition inspections and reports as required by law or Department policy.
