Job Description

Utility Field Technician → SUE Technician (Training Provided) Based in Lenoir, NC | Mostly Field-Based | Regional Travel Are you someone who enjoys working outdoors , using your hands, and being part of real infrastructure projects? Have you worked in construction, utilities, grading, surveying, directional drilling, or general labor and want a long‑term career path with specialized skills? We're hiring Utility Field Technicians who want to grow into Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technicians . This role is built for hard‑working, safety‑minded people who want to move beyond general labor and learn a high‑value technical trade that supports roads, buildings, and major infrastructure projects. You don't need formal SUE experience to start. If you're dependable, willing to learn, and comfortable working outdoors, we'll train you. What Is SUE? SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering) is how engineers and contractors find, map, and verify underground utilities before construction begins —preventing dangerous hits, shutdowns, and costly mistakes. You'll be part of the team that makes job sites safer and projects successful. What You'll Do (Day to Day) You'll work with a small field crew on active job sites across North Carolina and the Southeast. Learn to locate underground utilities (electric, gas, water, fiber, sewer) using industry tools like electromagnetic locators and ground penetrating radar (GPR) Mark and document underground utilities so engineers can design safely and accurately Assist with vacuum excavation (soft digging) to visually confirm utility locations Collect field data using tablets or iPads (we train you) Read basic plans, drawings, and utility records (we'll help you learn this) Maintain tools, equipment, and a clean, safe worksite Follow all safety rules and jobsite protocols Work outdoors in different weather conditions Travel to nearby projects during the week (overnight travel may be required) As you gain experience, you'll move into more advanced responsibilities and technical work. What We're Looking For Required High school diploma or GED Valid driver's license (or ability to obtain one) Comfortable working outdoors and around construction equipment Willing to travel for project work (up to ~60%) Able to lift up to 50 lbs and work on your feet for long shifts Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail Nice to Have (Not Required) Utility locating, surveying, or site work experience Blueprint or plan reading Experience using tablets or mobile apps in the field Training, Tools & Advancement All training provided (including SUE methods and locating technologies) Company vehicle , tools, and equipment Opportunity to earn industry certifications (including UTA/SUE credentials) Clear advancement path into: SUE Technician Senior SUE Technician Crew Lead or Specialist roles We promote from within and invest in people who show up, learn, and take pride in their work. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
