Job Description

A Painter's Helper (also called Painter Helper or Painting Assistant) is an entry-level role in the painting and construction trade. They support lead painters or journeyman painters by handling preparatory, supportive, and cleanup tasks on residential, commercial, or industrial painting projects. This is a physically demanding job that often serves as a stepping stone to becoming a fully qualified painter.
Key Responsibilities and Duties Surface Preparation :
Clean, sand, scrape, or sandblast surfaces to remove old paint, dirt, or debris. Fill holes, cracks, or imperfections and ensure surfaces are smooth and ready for painting.
Protection and Masking :
Cover or mask floors, furniture, trim, windows, and other areas not being painted using drop cloths, plastic sheeting, or tape.
Material Handling :
Mix paints, varnishes, or other finishes to the correct color and consistency. Transport materials, tools, ladders, scaffolding, and equipment to and from job sites. Assisting with
Application :
Help apply paint using brushes, rollers, or sprayers under the direction of the lead painter (some roles may allow limited independent application).
Cleanup and Maintenance :
Clean work areas, tools, brushes, sprayers, and equipment after jobs. Perform routine maintenance on tools.
Safety and Housekeeping :
Follow all safety protocols (including wearing respirators or other PPE when needed), maintain a clean and organized site, and report any issues.
Other Tasks :
Load/unload materials, assist with setup/teardown of scaffolding or ladders, and provide general support as needed. Required Skills and Qualities Physical fitness and stamina (ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, work on knees, bend, reach, and stand for long periods). Attention to detail for proper prep work. Basic knowledge of hand and power tools. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions or indoors in tight spaces. Teamwork and a willingness to learn from experienced painters. Reliability, punctuality, and a professional demeanor (especially around clients). Typical Requirements No formal education is usually required (high school diploma or equivalent is often preferred). Previous experience is a plus but many positions are entry-level and offer on-the-job training. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (for some roles). Ability to pass a background check or drug test (common in construction).
