Street Department Laborer- One Full Time position

Job Description:

A Street Department Laborer is responsible for the operation of a variety of construction and maintenance equipment and for performing manual labor activities as needed and/or required by the street Department. Although street maintenance is the most common type of work performed. Laborers in this position also work in park maintenance, as sign crews, sewage crews, and in other related areas. The position requires operation of Borough-owned vehicles, such as pickup trucks. Backhoe, street sweeper, dump trucks, salt spreaders, snow plows, etc. as required. The operation of power tools and equipment, such as mowers, chain saws, air compressor, etc. when required is also necessary. The candidate will be required to inspect and repair equipment as required by department procedures as well as be able to make repairs to borough roads, curbs and sidewalks as required. The applicant will mow grass, prune trees and hedges, and plant flowers and trees as required. There is a requirement to clean borough offices, garage areas and park facilities, as well as clean up litter and empty trash cans. Maintenance of sanitary and storm sewers and making repairs and/or conducting routine maintenance procedures is required. Sweeping and clean up of debris and materials from the roads will be required as snow and ice removal, including manual shoveling of snow. Conducting other job related duties is required. Position:

A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. A valid Pennsylvania State driver's license is required as well as knowledge and ability to operate Borough owned vehicles and equipment, such as dump trucks, backhoe, snow plows, salt spreaders. Power tools, chain saws, air compressor, etc. The ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and work independently is required. The candidate will be required to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting heavy objects and working in all type of weather conditions. Safety procedures and practices are required, as well as wearing safety equipment. A good working relationship with co-workers and the general public is a necessity. The candidate must be able to be called out for emergencies such as snowfall, floods, downed trees, etc. and must be knowledgeable in a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks.

Working Conditions:

Frequent lifting, bending, kneeling, stooping and standing. Job entails regular exposure to cold, heat, dust, fumes, and noise; constant exposure to deadlines; great pressure and fatigue during an average workday; frequent evening and/or weekend work is required; requires 24 hour on-call status for emergency situations; required to be on call on a rotating basis, staying within a reasonable response time, answering a phone call from a supervisor; long hours operating heavy equipment.
