Job Description

Position Title:
Water and Sewer Technician Departments:
Water and Sewer Responsible To:
Water Superintendent Primary Objective of the
Position:
Employee is responsible for water and sewer department procedures, routine and preventive maintenance, and other related duties.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
Performs maintenance, repairs and replacements on all aspects of the water and wastewater systems. Must be able to understand system SCADA and operate as needed, also needs to be able to make adjustment to programed equipment as needed to maintain system. Operates all necessary equipment to perform duties, for example: backhoe, air compressor, dump trucks, and front-end loaders. Assists in maintaining an adequate inventory of repairs and replacement parts. Maintains all equipment and records related to the water department. Reads and records water meter reading monthly and performs necessary maintenance on meters. Compiles with all safety rules and regulations. Works towards acquiring and maintaining required water operator certifications that are required by the state. Assists with snow removal when needed. Cooperates with other departments and assists when needed. Other duties as assigned.
Inclement Weather:
When Inclement weather is predicted it will be the responsibility of the employee scheduled for work to make arrangements to be inside city limits. The Public Works Department or Police Department may be able to pick up employees for work within the city limits based on need. It is expected that the employee notifies their supervisor of any changes as soon as possible. Knowledge/Qualifications Required by the
Position:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. This position rotates on-call as required and also responds to on-call assignments. Experience and knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, concrete and asphalt placement skills. Must be able to operate backhoe, air compressor, front-end loader and other related equipment. Employee must possess a valid South Dakota driver's license. Within one year of hire, must be willing to test for a commercial driver's license if the Superintendent determines it is necessary. Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, must be able to obtain within 4 years a SD lagoons, SD class I water treatment, SD class II wastewater collections and SD class II water distribution certification.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Work is performed at both an office location within the Maintenance Shop and outside the office. The employee may be exposed to high voltage, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather. The position requires the use of safety and protective devices. A city vehicle will be provided to conduct inspections and other necessary duties of the position Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must occasionally lift light or heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color. Heavy equipment, machinery, hand tools, and power tools.
Type of Supervision/Evaluation Received:
This position is subject to 6 month probation, this position will be subject to performance reviews conducted by the water/sewer Supervisor or Foreman.
Salary & Benefits:
This is an hourly position, wages depending on experience, Benefits as defined in the employee manual.
