Responsibilities include:
Supervision :
Managing a team of laborers and equipment operators, ensuring tasks are completed safely and on schedule.
Planning :
Interpreting blueprints, site plans, and specifications to determine excavation requirements (e.g., depth, grading, location).
Equipment Management :
Overseeing the use and maintenance of heavy machinery like excavators, bulldozers, and backhoes.
Safety Compliance :
Enforcing OSHA and site-specific safety regulations, including proper shoring, trenching, and PPE usage.
Coordination :
Liaising with project managers, engineers, and other trades to align excavation with broader construction goals.
Problem-Solving :
Addressing issues like unexpected soil conditions, groundwater, or utility conflicts.
Documentation :
Tracking progress, reporting daily activities, and ensuring materials/labor stay within budget.
Qualifications :
Typically requires experience in excavation or construction (3-5+ years), leadership skills, knowledge of heavy equipment, and familiarity with safety standards. A valid driver's license and certifications (e.g., OSHA 30) may be preferred. Excavation Laborers Excavation laborers perform the hands-on work under the direction of the foreman.
Responsibilities include:
Manual Digging :
Using shovels, picks, and other tools to dig trenches, clear debris, or assist machinery in tight spaces.
Equipment Support :
Assisting operators by spotting, guiding machinery, or setting up equipment like laser levels or grade stakes.
Site Preparation :
Clearing vegetation, marking boundaries, or installing erosion control measures (e.g., silt fences).
Material Handling :
Moving dirt, gravel, or other materials via wheelbarrows, buckets, or conveyors.
Safety Tasks :
Installing trench boxes, shoring, or barricades to ensure safe working conditions.
Clean-Up :
Maintaining a tidy site by removing spoil piles, backfilling, or compacting soil as needed.
Qualifications :
Physical stamina, ability to follow instructions, and basic knowledge of construction tools. Prior experience is a plus but not always required; entry-level roles often provide on-the-job training.
