This position is responsible for assisting with the inspection, adjustment, securing, and handling of materials and loads transported by rail, along with performing general railroad labor duties. The ideal candidate is comfortable working outdoors, performing physically demanding work, traveling extensively, and working around railcars, heavy equipment, and active railroad operations. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Inspect railcar loads and materials to identify shifted, loose, uneven, or improperly positioned loads. Assist with adjusting, repositioning, and securing loads on railcars as directed. Install, remove, or adjust blocking, bracing, banding, tie-downs, and other load-securing materials. Assist with loading and unloading railroad materials and equipment. Perform general railroad labor and material-handling duties. Use hand tools, power tools, chains, straps, and other equipment required to complete assigned work. Work safely around railcars, railroad tracks, vehicles, cranes, forklifts, and other heavy equipment. Maintain a clean and organized work area and assist with jobsite housekeeping. Inspect tools and equipment before use and report damaged or unsafe equipment. Follow all Genesis Rail Services, customer, railroad, and jobsite safety requirements. Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. Participate in job briefings, safety meetings, and required training. Travel to various railroad and customer locations as assigned. Perform additional labor and railroad-related duties as needed. Qualifications Must be at least 18 years of age. Previous railroad, construction, industrial, material-handling, or general labor experience is preferred. Ability to safely operate and use common hand and power tools. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Must be dependable and able to work effectively as part of a crew. Must be willing and able to travel extensively and stay overnight for extended periods when required. Must be able to work varying schedules, including days, nights, weekends, and overtime as project needs require. Must be able to meet applicable customer and railroad access requirements. Must comply with company drug and alcohol policies and other employment requirements. Physical Requirements This position requires frequent physical activity in an outdoor railroad environment.
Employees must be able to:
Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, reach, push, and pull. Lift and carry heavy materials, tools, and equipment. Climb onto and around rail equipment when authorized and required. Work on uneven surfaces, ballast, and varying terrain. Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and other environmental conditions. Perform physically demanding work for extended periods. Work Environment Work is primarily performed outdoors at railroad, industrial, and customer facilities. Employees may be exposed to moving equipment, loud noise, dust, uneven terrain, weather conditions, and other hazards normally associated with railroad and construction operations. Strict compliance with all safety procedures and PPE requirements is mandatory.
