Job Description
Position Summary
The Excavation Foreman is responsible for directing day-to-day field operations on excavation and site-prep projects. This role requires strong leadership, hands-on equipment operation, the ability to read and interpret plans and site layouts, and the use of technology to document progress and communicate with office staff and clients. The Foreman will enforce safety and quality standards, optimize resource use, and mentor crew members. Key Responsibilities Lead and supervise onsite crews (operators, laborers, subcontractors); assign tasks, set priorities, and monitor performance. Operate heavy equipment as needed (excavators, loaders, dozers, skid steers, compactors, backhoes) and ensure proper care and maintenance. Read and interpret construction drawings, grading plans, utility plans, and site layouts; translate plans into daily work activities. Plan daily work sequences, manage material and equipment logistics, and coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to meet schedule. Enforce OSHA and company safety policies; conduct toolbox talks, site inspections, and hazard assessments.
Ensure quality control:
verify excavation depths, compaction, grades, elevations, trench sloping/benching, and final cleanup per specifications.Use technology for project management:
digital plan viewers, GPS/grade-control systems, field reporting apps, timekeeping, and photos. Maintain clear communication with project managers, engineers, inspectors, and clients; report progress, issues, and change conditions promptly. Complete daily logs, equipment checklists, incident reports, materials tracking, and other required documentation accurately and on time. Train, coach, and develop crew members; enforce company policies and promote a professional work environment. Identify opportunities for efficiency, cost savings, and schedule improvement; propose solutions to project management. Required Qualifications Proven experience (typically 5+ years) in excavation/site work and at least 2-3 years in a supervisory or foreman role. Competent equipment operator with documented experience running excavators, loaders, dozers, backhoes, etc. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, grading plans, utility plans, and survey information. Strong leadership and crew management skills with a track record of delivering projects safely and on schedule.Proficient with construction field technology:
plan-viewing tools, field reporting apps, GPS/grade-control systems, and basic office software (email, spreadsheets). Working knowledge of excavation safety, trenching and shoring requirements, erosion control, and compaction testing basics. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills; able to coordinate with multiple stakeholders. Valid driver's license; clean driving record. Ability to travel to job sites as required. Preferred Qualifications and Certifications OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification. NCCER or other construction trade certification. Trenching/shoring certification and/or confined space training. Heavy equipment operator certification. First Aid/CPR and/or OSHA Health & Safety training. Experience with GPS/grade-control machine guidance systems. Physical Requirements & Work Conditions Frequent outdoor work in variable weather conditions; ability to work long hours and occasional weekends during project peaks.Physically demanding tasks:
standing, walking on uneven terrain, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs, and exposure to dust, noise, and heavy equipment. Must be able to wear required PPE (hard hat, safety boots, high-visibility clothing, hearing protection).Pay:
