Director of Construction - Residential Remodeling Cann Construction | Washington, DC Metro Area | Full-Time About the Role Cann Construction is seeking an experienced Director of Construction to lead our residential project delivery team across the Washington, DC metro area. This is an opportunity to step into a senior leadership position with direct access to the Founder & CEO , real decision-making authority, and the ability to shape how a growing construction company delivers its projects. This is a senior leadership role responsible for everything that happens after a contract is signed: the schedule, budget, trades, quality of the finished work, and the client's experience throughout the project. Currently, our Founder & CEO sits at the top of the project delivery function. This role will take ownership of that responsibility. You'll lead three Construction Managers and our in-house Interior Designer , serve as the senior point of contact for clients through design development and construction, and protect the margin on every project we build. We're a small, growing company, which means this is a hands-on leadership role with the opportunity to make a visible impact. You'll be in the field, in the numbers, and in JobTread, while also developing the team, improving systems, and helping shape how Cann Construction grows. What You'll Be Doing Leading the Team Directly supervise three Construction Managers and our in-house Interior Designer Set expectations, provide feedback, and coach team members through challenging construction issues Balance project assignments against each manager's capacity and skill set Hold the Interior Designer accountable for selections and specifications being completed on time and within the client's budget Help hire and onboard additional team members as the company grows Running Project Delivery Own the schedule, budget, scope, and quality outcome of every active project Run a weekly production meeting with the Construction Managers covering look-ahead schedules, staffing and resource needs, material lead times, open questions, and risk so problems surface while there's still time to solve them Walk active jobs regularly Hold the team to standards for site cleanliness, safety, subcontractor workmanship, and how we present ourselves inside a client's home Own punch-list quality, project closeout, and warranty response Owning the Client Relationship After Contract Serve as the senior Cann Construction point of contact from contract signing through final walkthrough Set expectations early regarding schedule, milestones, allowances, and the change-order process Keep clients ahead of surprises rather than behind them Lead client meetings on a consistent cadence Ensure written updates are provided consistently, even during weeks when there are no significant developments to report Communicate delays, unforeseen conditions, and budget changes directly and early Protecting Margin Know where every project stands against its budget at any given time Review and approve buyout, subcontractor scopes, and vendor pricing Review estimates and scopes of work for accuracy and completeness before they go to a client Price and document change orders and obtain written approval before work begins Ensure change orders are invoiced and collected so there is no unbilled work Identify cost creep or margin erosion early and flag it to the CEO with a recommended course of action Preconstruction & Permitting Review construction drawings for permit readiness, code compliance, and buildability, including identifying what's missing rather than simply checking what's drawn Manage permit strategy and submissions across DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia Navigate historic review, HOA and condo board approvals, and zoning when required Run the internal handoff from signed contract to production so scope, budget, drawings, allowances, and schedule transfer cleanly Owning Our Systems Own JobTread as Cann Construction's system of record Ensure budgets, schedules, daily logs, selections, change orders, and vendor bills remain current and accurate Hold the team accountable for keeping project information updated rather than relying on someone to chase missing information Build processes where they are missing and correct processes that exist but are not being followed Report to the CEO on project health, margin, and forecast on a consistent cadence What We're Looking For Demonstrated experience successfully managing high-end residential renovation, remodeling, or custom home projects , ideally including occupied homes and older housing stock Leadership experience managing people who manage projects , not just managing projects yourself Ability to hold a team accountable while maintaining a positive, professional leadership approach Strong financial fluency , including the ability to critically review estimates, build and defend budgets, price change orders fairly, and clearly explain financial information to both clients and ownership Fluency with architectural and structural drawings and the judgment to identify what's missing from a set Working knowledge of residential building codes and permitting, including knowing when to verify requirements with the appropriate jurisdiction Comfort working extensively in construction management software; Cann Construction uses JobTread Experience with Google Workspace and Excel If you haven't used JobTread specifically, experience with a comparable construction management platform and the ability to learn new systems quickly Strong client presence , including the ability to communicate difficult news while maintaining client trust Self-direction and the ability to independently manage follow-up, priorities, and processes within a lean organization Valid driver's license and reliable transportation, as regular travel between job sites throughout the DC metro area is required Helpful, But Not Required Experience with DC, Montgomery County, or Northern Virginia permitting and historic review Experience with row houses, condominiums, or urban infill projects with tight sites and limited staging Design-build experience or comfort working alongside an in-house designer Existing relationships with quality DC-area subcontractors and vendors Spanish language ability Relevant licensure or professional certification What Success Looks Like In your first 90 days, you'll know every active project's scope, budget position, schedule risk, and client status and be able to speak confidently to each. You'll have working relationships with each Construction Manager, our Interior Designer, and our core trade partners. Weekly production meetings and the client update cadence will be running on your rhythm. You'll also have identified the three highest-impact opportunities to improve how we build and begun addressing the first one with the CEO. After that, we measure this role on: Projects finishing on or ahead of the contract schedule Gross margin at closeout matching or beating the sold estimate Change orders being priced and approved in writing and invoiced within an established turnaround time JobTread staying current across the project portfolio Clients finishing their projects willing to refer Cann Construction and allow us to publish the completed work Compensation & Benefits Base salary: $120,000-$135,000 per year , depending on experience Quarterly bonus opportunity: $7,500-$15,000 , tied to performance Medical, dental, and vision coverage Life insurance Gas card Paid time off and holidays: 10 days PTO plus two weeks between Christmas and New Year's Paid licensing, certification, and continuing education Direct access to the owner, real decision-making authority, and a genuine hand in how the company grows Work Environment This role splits time between our office, client homes, and active job sites, and you should expect to be in the field regularly. You'll need to be comfortable at a computer for extended periods and on job sites standing, walking, climbing ladders and stairs, bending, and occasionally lifting materials. Daily travel within the DC metro area is part of the position. Some early mornings and occasional evening or weekend client communication may also be required based on project needs.
