Job Description

Building Official Recruitment Brochure The Building Official is part of the Village's Community Development department and reports directly to the Community Development Director. The Community Development team includes a staff of 17 full-time professional and administrative staff. The team consists of 2 building inspectors, 3 code compliance officers, health and consumer protection officer, building permit coordinator, 3 building permit technicians, planning manager, senior planner, associate planner, zoning administrator, and assistant to the director. The Building Official is responsible for planning, supervising, and coordinating the Building Division's activities and operations with a staff of 10 full-time employees. The position is the authorized enforcement officer of the Building Code, which includes the location, design, materials, construction, alteration, repair, equipment, maintenance, use, occupancy, removal and demolition of the buildings, structures, and appurtenances located in the Village of Tinley Park. In addition, this role performs a broad range of building, permitting, and code administrative functions, including plan review, building inspections, code administration, interpretation, and code compliance. The position works directly with property owners, architects, contractors, builders, and residents to explain code requirements, answer code-related questions, and diagnose and resolve project-specific permitting and construction related problems. High School Diploma is required. Bachelor's Degree in building engineering, architecture, or construction engineering preferred but not required. A minimum of five to seven years in the building design or construction industry, building or housing inspection, code enforcement, or closely related field with at least three years in a supervisory capacity is also required. Must have a valid driver's license.
ICC Residential Building Inspector certification required. Within 6 months, ICC certification as a Residential Energy Inspector and ICC Commercial Building and Commercial Energy Inspector or ICC Commercial Combination is also required. The ideal candidate will possess an outstanding work ethic, positive attitude, and be self-motivated. They will be familiar with principles, practices, and objectives of municipal government, be customer service focused, be well versed in a wide range of residential and commercial building applications, and be able to manage effectively during periods of high volume. They will be an excellent communicator, can motivate a dedicated staff, and will focus on efficient and effective management of daily operations. Ideal candidate will have min. 5 years' experience performing residential and commercial plan reviews in building, accessibility, electrical, energy and mechanical aspects of building design. They must be able to work collaboratively and effectively communicate technical and non-technical information.
