Job Description

Job Title:
General Superintendent Reports to:
Chief of Operations Direct Reports:
All Company Field Staff (Including Superintendents, Foremen, Operators, and Laborers)
Department:
Operations (Construction and Demolition) Job Summary The General Superintendent oversees all Client field operations using their extensive experience, leadership qualities and communication skills to lead by example and promote Client Corporation's core values and provide high level supervision to the project teams with the result of delivering quality projects safely on or under budget and on or ahead of schedule.
Essential Functions:
Construction/Demolition Operations:
  • Responsible for high level supervision of all field management and coordination of all projects
  • Inspect all projects regularly or as required
  • Ensure sites are organized, clean, safe, and work is being conducted in a professional manner
  • Review and coordinate manpower needs with Superintendents daily/weekly
  • Review and coordinate equipment and materials needs with Superintendents daily/weekly
  • Review site safety and assist with safety planning, coordination and implementation
  • Review schedules, logistics, and constructability plans with project teams during construction
  • Provide direction to resolve errors, discrepancies and operational and project issues
  • Provide technical assistance and support to Superintendents, Foreman and Project Teams
  • Conduct regular meetings with Superintendents and Foremen to evaluate company's overall performance and identify areas of improvement
  • Ensure project schedules are on track and that project documentation is being performed daily (daily reports, time entries, equipment entries, project photos, PTP's etc.)
  • Enforce company QA/QC procedures and best practices
  • Provide oversight and adherence to the safety program, policies and procedures in coordination with the Safety Manager
  • Coordinate safety training for project teams and field personnel in collaboration with Safety Manager
  • Assist in developing and sharing SOP's, best practices and techniques, etc.
  • Review CRM jobsite safety inspection reports/review job history and performance/make corrective actions for any high hazard or repeat notices
  • Review job purchases to evaluate best practices being utilized
  • Obtain and monitor Forman's tools and evaluate purchasing versus sharing
  • Responsible for JHA's for major activities and attends pre-planning meetings
  • Discuss performance and goals with Team members for their future development
  • Correspond with Client owners, senior management, owning entities, engineers and clients following chain of command
  • Balance all project schedules including day operations and night operations
  • Responsible for employee discipline according to Client Corporations policies and procedures
  • Evaluation and approval of job site overtime and overtime requests review and decision shared with senior management
  • Assure job site trainee, female participation and minority participation project goals are met
  • Responsibility for subcontractor's performance including workmanship, quality, safety and schedule
  • Assign coverage for Team members time away or vacation absence
  • Perform weather look ahead for projects to avoid cost and unneeded labor issues
  • Choose most qualified team members for work tasks on projects to obtain best results
  • Mentor team members to promote advancement
Estimating and Preconstruction Assistance:
  • Advise on production including resource loading, crew, equipment and materials
  • Prepare logistics and site-specific safety plans with the project teams
  • Visit future project sites and attend bid walk throughs as required
  • Aid estimating department on budget review, logistics, schedule, and constructability
  • Advise on risk mitigation strategies during preconstruction
  • Assist with development of work plans with consulting engineers and the Project Team Assist with obtaining subcontractor and vendor pricing for work tasks
General Duties:
  • Participate in weekly Department Leader Meetings
  • Participate in Superintendent and Foreman interviewing and hiring process
  • Identify areas of procedural improvement for review and/or implementation
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients, trade contractors, architects, and engineers
  • Assist in recruiting, mentoring, and retaining personnel
  • Attend internal meetings including project closeout
  • Perform and participate in project team performance evaluations
  • Streamline communication from office to field personnel
  • Collaborate with Safety Manager on department and project specific safety needs, including but not limited to safety inspections, trainings, PPE, etc.
  • Assist with company fleet and equipment scheduling and management

Computer Skills:
Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe, and Bluebeam required Proficiency with AutoCAD, Primavera P6, Bid2Win preferred but not required
Position Requirements:
Understanding of Local Union trades and requirements Heavy Civil, Bridge Construction, Marine Construction, Heavy Demolition, and Environmental Services experience Bachelor's degree or equivalent field experience Understanding of design, engineering and construction Minimum 20 years of experience in heavy civil, bridge construction, marine construction and demolition Leadership and mentoring capabilities Team building capabilities Excellent leadership and communication skills 30 Hour OSHA Certification Heavy equipment operation experience (licensed heavy equipment operator
  • preferred) Ability to use technology (construction management and office software) Basic understanding of HR practices, contracts, insurance, legal requirements) Long term and short-term strategic planning capabilities Ability to work in all construction delivery methods
