Job description Position Summary The Underground Utility Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all field operations related to underground utility installation on commercial and civil construction projects. This position supervises field crews, manages production, ensures quality and safety compliance, and coordinates daily operations with project management, inspectors, subcontractors, and clients. The Superintendent is expected to lead crews efficiently while maintaining production schedules, quality standards, and company safety expectations. Duties & Responsibilities Plan, coordinate, and supervise underground utility field operations and in-house crews. Determine construction methods, manpower requirements, equipment needs, and material quantities necessary to maintain production schedules. Coordinate daily activities with Project Managers, Foremen, subcontractors, inspectors, and utility representatives. Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and project documents and accurately transfer design information to field conditions. Monitor project progress, production rates, and workforce performance to ensure schedule adherence. Enforce company policies, safety procedures, and operational standards among field personnel. Serve as the site safety leader by maintaining compliance with
OSHA/MOSH
regulations and company safety policies. Conduct regular site inspections to ensure work quality, proper installation, and compliance with plans and specifications. Identify and resolve field conflicts, utility coordination issues, and construction challenges as they arise. Assist Project Managers with scheduling, sequencing, project planning, and implementation of project procedures. Coordinate equipment usage, deliveries, and material procurement with vendors and suppliers. Maintain strong working relationships with clients, engineers, inspectors, municipalities, and utility companies. Lead, mentor, and train Foremen and field personnel to improve safety, quality, and production performance. Participate in operational and project meetings and communicate critical project information to field teams. Maintain accurate field documentation, production tracking, and daily reporting. Ensure all work complies with applicable building codes, utility standards, environmental requirements, and legal regulations. Required Skills & Abilities Strong leadership and crew management abilities. Extensive knowledge of underground utility installation, including water, sewer, and storm drain systems. Strong understanding of heavy civil/site development construction practices, equipment, and sequencing. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, utility profiles, grading plans, and specifications. Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills. Ability to manage multiple crews and priorities simultaneously. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with field personnel, clients, and management teams. Knowledge of quality control, production tracking, and cost awareness. Mathematical and analytical skills for layout verification and material estimation. Proficient computer skills and ability to use construction management software and mobile field applications. Education & Experience Minimum 5 years of experience in underground utility construction supervision. Experience supervising commercial site development or heavy civil utility projects Required. OSHA 30 certification Required. Valid driver's license Required. Technical Knowledge Experience with HCSS Heavy Job and other field management applications preferred. Familiarity with GPS/machine control, utility layout, and production tracking systems is a plus.
Pay:
