Job Description

Underground Utilities SuperintendentPosition Overview Lead and manage daily field operations for underground utility construction projects, ensuring safe, on-time, and on-budget delivery. The Underground Utilities Superintendent will coordinate crews and subcontractors, enforce trench safety and shoring standards, oversee sewer, water, storm, and utility installation activities, and maintain strong communication with project management, inspectors, and stakeholders to meet quality and regulatory requirements.

Key ResponsibilitiesSupervise and coordinate all field activities related to underground utilities, including sewer, water, storm drainage, and other utility installations.

Implement and enforce trench safety, shoring, dewatering, and confined-space procedures to maintain a safe work environment.

Direct and mentor foremen and labor crews; schedule manpower, equipment, and materials to meet project milestones.

Work with project managers and engineers to interpret plans and specifications, resolve field issues, and implement change orders.

Conduct daily site inspections and safety briefings; ensure compliance with OSHA, local regulations, and company safety policies.

Coordinate with subcontractors, traffic control, and third-party utilities to minimize disruptions and maintain project flow.

Monitor quality control and testing activities; document installation progress, non-conformances, and corrective actions.

Prepare accurate field reports, time sheets, subcontractor logs, and progress updates for project leadership.

Manage site logistics, including staging, access, materials handling, and equipment placement to maximize efficiency.

Respond to emergency situations and resolve unforeseen site conditions while minimizing schedule and cost impacts.

QualificationsProven experience in underground utilities construction (required), including hands-on knowledge of trenching, backfill, and utility installation techniques.5+ years of experience in a superintendent or lead field role on heavy civil or utility projects preferred.

Strong understanding of sewer, water, and stormwater systems, plus familiarity with shoring, dewatering, and trench safety practices.

Working knowledge of local codes, permitting processes, and utility coordination practices.

OSHA 30-hour construction safety card preferred; confined space entry and trench/shoring certifications a plus.

Excellent leadership, communication, and team coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple crews and stakeholders.

Proficient in reading construction plans, specifications, and as-built documentation; basic computer skills for field reporting.

Valid drivers license and reliable transportation; willingness to work variable hours and travel to project sites as required.

Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and commitment to quality, safety, and schedule performance.
