About Us We are a growing and established general contracting construction company based in Hickory, North Carolina. Our team is committed to delivering quality projects while building lasting relationships with clients, subcontractors, and employees. We are seeking an experienced Controller with strong construction accounting expertise to oversee our financial operations and contribute to the strategic growth of the company. Position Summary The Controller will report directly to the President. This individual will be responsible for all accounting and financial functions of the company, while also leading a small accounting and administrative staff. The successful candidate will bring deep knowledge of construction accounting, strong leadership skills, and the ability to provide timely financial information that supports sound business decisions. Essential Responsibilities Financial Management Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, and financial reporting. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports. Manage budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning. Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies. Coordinate annual financial reviews, audits, tax preparation, and banking relationships.
Construction Accounting Manage and oversee:
Job costing Work-in-progress (WIP) reporting Percentage-of-completion accounting Contract billing and collections Change order tracking Retainage management Cost-to-complete analysis Project profitability reporting Partner with project managers and company leadership to analyze project performance and financial results. Provide accounting Leadership & Team Development Lead, supervise, and develop a small accounting and administrative team. Establish and improve accounting procedures, administrative workflows and HR functions. Promote accountability, efficiency, and continuous improvement across the department. Serve as a trusted advisor to the President and leadership team. Technology & Systems Utilize and maintain financial and project management systems including: Sage Accounting Software Procore Buildertrend Ensure accurate integration of project, operational, and financial data. Recommend and implement process improvements leveraging available technology. Qualifications Required Strong background in accounting, preferably within a general contracting environment.
Proven experience with:
Job costing WIP schedules Construction contract accounting Revenue recognition Financial forecasting and budgeting Experience managing accounting and administrative personnel. Advanced Excel and financial reporting skills. Strong communication and leadership abilities. Preferred Minimum 5 years experience in construction accounting CPA designation or CPA candidate. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Experience with Sage accounting software. Working knowledge of Procore and Buildertrend. Experience collaborating directly with company ownership or executive leadership.
