Job Description
SuperintendentPosition OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Superintendent to lead field operations on heavy civil and underground utilities projects. The Superintendent will oversee construction activities, ensure safety and quality standards, coordinate crews and subcontractors, and keep projects on schedule and within budget. The ideal candidate has a strong background in civil construction, underground utilities, water and wastewater systems, trenching, and manhole/duct installations.
Key ResponsibilitiesProvide on-site leadership and supervision of construction crews, subcontractors, and equipment for heavy civil and underground utilities projects.
Plan, schedule and coordinate daily work activities to meet project milestones and contract requirements.
Enforce safety programs and OSHA/regulatory requirements, conduct daily safety briefings, and ensure proper PPE and safe work practices.
Oversee installation, testing, and commissioning of water lines, wastewater piping, WWTP components, and related systems.
Manage trenching, shoring, excavation, backfill, compaction, manhole construction, duct installation, and other underground utility operations.
Read and interpret plans, specifications, and as-built drawings; verify grades, alignment and elevations in the field.
Inspect work for quality and compliance with project specifications; coordinate corrective actions and quality documentation.
Coordinate material deliveries, equipment usage, and site logistics to optimize productivity and minimize delays.
Communicate daily with project managers, engineers, inspectors, and owners; prepare progress reports, RFIs, and field documentation.
Supervise and mentor field personnel, conduct performance evaluations, and support crew training and development.
Identify and manage subcontractor performance, coordinate inspection and testing, and process change orders or field directives as needed.
Ensure environmental compliance, traffic control, utility coordination, and protection of existing infrastructure.
QualificationsMinimum 7 years of progressive field experience in heavy civil construction or underground utilities, with at least 3 years in a superintendent or lead role.
Direct hands-on experience with UG utilities including water lines, wastewater systems, WWTP components, trenching, manholes, ducts, and underground utility installation.
Proven knowledge of construction means and methods, shoring/trenching safety, excavation, compaction, and backfill procedures.
Strong ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and survey data; experience using grade stakes, levels, and GPS equipment preferred.
Safety certifications such as OSHA 10/30, Confined Space Entry, First Aid/CPR preferred; demonstrated commitment to a zero-incident culture.
Excellent communication, leadership and team management skills; ability to coordinate multiple crews and stakeholder groups.
Experience managing subcontractors, materials logistics, and site documentation including daily reports, RFIs, and change orders.
Valid drivers license; reliable transportation and ability to travel to multiple job sites daily.
Prior experience working with public agencies, utility owners, and inspectors on permitting and compliance is preferred.
Familiarity with project scheduling, cost control fundamentals, and basic computer skills (email, field reporting software, Microsoft Office).
