Traveling Superintendent Job Description This role offers an opportunity for an experienced commercial construction professional to lead tenant fit-out projects across multiple states while working in a structured Monday-Friday schedule. The Traveling Superintendent oversees day-to-day site operations, coordinates subcontractors, ensures work quality and safety, and keeps projects on schedule and within scope. The position requires frequent overnight travel during the week and a strong background in commercial construction and carpentry. Responsibilities Oversee all on-site activities for commercial tenant fit-out projects from mobilization through project completion. Schedule, coordinate, and manage subcontractors to ensure work progresses according to the project plan and timeline. Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, construction documents, and specifications to guide daily field operations. Monitor and enforce quality control standards to ensure all work meets project requirements and company expectations. Supervise field personnel and subcontractors, providing direction, feedback, and problem-solving support as needed. Conduct regular site walks to identify issues, verify progress, and ensure adherence to safety and quality standards. Communicate project status, issues, and needs clearly and promptly with project stakeholders and office staff. Plan and manage daily and weekly schedules to align labor, materials, and equipment with project milestones. Perform basic carpentry and hands-on tasks as needed to support project progress and maintain job site efficiency. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site in compliance with company policies and applicable regulations. Travel to assigned job sites each week, typically Monday through Thursday, and represent the company professionally with clients and partners. Complete administrative tasks and project documentation during designated office time, typically on Fridays. Use a company-provided vehicle responsibly, adhering to all driving and safety guidelines while traveling between job sites. Essential Skills At least 5 years of experience in commercial tenant fit-out work, with strong preference for retail or similar commercial environments. At least 6 years of experience as a superintendent on commercial construction projects. A minimum of 4 years of supervisory experience overseeing construction crews or subcontractors. At least 5 years of carpentry experience, with the ability to perform and evaluate carpentry work on site. Demonstrated experience in commercial construction management, including scheduling and coordination of subcontractors. Proficiency in reading and comprehending blueprints and construction drawings. Experience with construction supervision and quality control on active job sites. Proven reliable work history supported by strong professional references. Ability and willingness to travel overnight multiple nights per week. Possession of a valid driver's license and a driving record suitable for operating a company vehicle. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a field environment. Effective communication skills to coordinate with subcontractors, office staff, and project stakeholders. Additional Skills & Qualifications background in retail construction or similar commercial fit-out projects. Hands-on carpentry skills that complement supervisory responsibilities. Experience working as a traveling superintendent or in roles that require frequent regional travel. Familiarity with construction scheduling practices and tools. Ability to work independently on remote job sites while maintaining consistent communication with the home office. Strong problem-solving abilities to address field issues quickly and keep projects on track. Professional demeanor and customer service mindset when interacting with clients and site personnel. Work Environment This is a field-based role with weekly travel to project sites, typically located between Maine and Virginia. Team members usually leave on Monday mornings and return Thursday afternoons, with no required weekend travel. Travel time begins one hour after departure on Monday mornings. Superintendents generally remain on a single project for several months at a time rather than rotating among multiple sites in one week. Fridays are reserved for administrative work at the office, and employees are expected to come in for approximately two hours at a time of their choosing. The company provides a daily per diem for travel days, a company truck, and a gas card, and handles booking and payment of hotel accommodations. The work takes place on active commercial construction sites, requiring appropriate field attire, adherence to safety practices, and comfort working in a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of West Chester, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $38.46/hr.
