Job Description

Superintendent Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia | Full-time We build trust, homes, and relationships. An estate built where the Blue Ridge meets the water. A home designed to be lived in for generations — by the family that commissioned it, and the ones who follow. Timber and stone drawn from the region. Glass placed precisely where the view earns it. Interiors detailed to a standard that quietly outlasts trends. This is the work. BrockWorks builds custom homes on Smith Mountain Lake for clients who notice these things — and so do we. Our homes are large, and they are crafted. The difference matters. We are hiring a Superintendent to run the field side of that work with the discipline, precision, and quiet authority it demands. We are looking for a special kind of person: someone who works hard, moves with purpose, and turns out a quality home every time. Hustle and craftsmanship are not opposites at BrockWorks — they are the same discipline, applied every day.
THE WORK
You will be the person standing between a set of drawings and a finished home. The job is technical, and the standard is high.
That means:
Reconciling architectural, structural, MEP, and interior design drawings against one another before the trades arrive — catching the conflict at the table, not in the wall Running the daily operations of an active luxury custom home build from foundation through final walk Scheduling, coordinating, and holding trades accountable to BrockWorks' written specifications and finish standards Coordinating long-lead luxury finishes — stone slabs, custom millwork, imported tile, specialty hardware — where a single mis-spec costs months Running pre-pour, pre-rock, and pre-finish walks with the rigor that catches issues at the cheapest possible moment to fix them Holding a finish carpenter to a 1/32-inch reveal — and knowing why it matters Maintaining a clean, organized, professional job site that reflects the caliber of the homes we build Documenting progress, issues, and decisions with the rigor that a 12 to 18 month build requires Working in close coordination with the Project Manager, who owns the client relationship — your job is to protect the build
THE KIND OF PROBLEM YOU WILL SOLVE A
subcontractor frames an interior soffit a half-inch off from the architectural drawing. The drywall crew is scheduled in three days. The electrician has already roughed in based on the framed dimension. The lighting designer's spec assumes the drawn dimension. The tile in the adjacent space is ordered to a fixed module that depends on the wall landing where it was drawn. What do you do, in what order, with what documentation, and what conversation do you have with whom — before the drywallers show up Monday morning? That is the job. If reading that paragraph made you start solving it in your head, we should talk.
WHO FITS THIS ROLE
The right person tends to share a particular pattern. You may recognize yourself in some of this: You are deeply detail-oriented — not as a discipline you impose on yourself, but as a way you naturally see the world You take pride in technical mastery; you would rather be the person who knows the answer than the person who has the loudest opinion You prefer to communicate in facts, drawings, and specifications rather than persuasion You are patient with long projects and steady through the slow weeks; you do not need constant variety to stay engaged You hold trades accountable through standards and consistency, not volume or theatrics You present yourself professionally — on the site, in the trailer, and in front of a client when the moment calls for it You believe a job site reflects the builder, and you would be uncomfortable with one that didn't If "fast-paced, wear many hats, figure it out as you go" describes the environment you're looking for, this is not the right role. The work here is deliberate, technical, and held to a standard that takes time to meet.
HOW WE OPERATE
We work from written standards. There is an SOP for the superintendent role, a documented bonus structure, a defined relationship between the field and the office, and a quality benchmark we hold in writing. You will not be asked to invent the system as you go — and you will be invited to refine it once you have earned the standing to.
WHAT YOU WILL BE MEASURED BY
Quality of the finished work, by BrockWorks' written standards Schedule adherence across the build Cleanliness and professionalism of the job site Trade performance and accountability on your projects Documentation discipline and field-to-office communication Client experience — measured by the quiet kind of trust that doesn't require explanation
OUR CORE VALUES
BrockWorks operates on five values. We hire for them, we hold each other to them, and we do not compromise on them: Service — White-glove treatment is not a slogan. It is how we answer the phone, walk a job site, and hand over a home. One Team — The PM, the super, the VDC, the trades, the office — one team, one standard, one outcome. Learning — Every project teaches us something. We are not finished learning our craft. Innovation — We refine our process continuously, in writing, so the next build is better than the last. Details — The home is in the details. Always.
QUALIFICATIONS
7+ years of superintendent or lead field experience on custom residential work Demonstrated experience on homes in the $2M+ build cost range, or comparable luxury-tier work Working fluency with construction drawings, specifications, and selection schedules Comfortable coordinating with architects, designers, engineers, and high-end trades Strong written and verbal communication; able to represent BrockWorks professionally with clients when needed Clean driving record and reliable presence on site
WHAT WE OFFER A
team that takes the work seriously. Projects that will be photographed, published, and remembered. A site truck, the tools you need, and a budget for what you don't have. Base salary plus a project-completion bonus structure tied to quality, schedule, and client experience — written, transparent, and the same for every super. A written operating system you can rely on, and a leadership team that wants your input on making it better. Time and authority to do the job properly.
TO APPLY
We are deliberate about who we hire. The Culture Index survey and a single project story tell us most of what we need to know before a conversation. 1. Complete the Culture Index survey — this helps us understand how you naturally work and ensures the role is a fit for you as much as for us: https://go.cultureindex.com/p/NhbecZECeOxHItbcMH7e 2. Send a resume and a brief note about a project you are particularly proud of — and one detail on that project that took the most discipline to get right — to priscilla@brockworksinc.com If the work above is the work you have been looking for, we would like to hear from you.
