Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Manager on Duty serves as the on-site operational leader for the Charleston Family YMCA during assigned evening and weekend shifts and assumes responsibility for oversight of all branch operations when branch leadership is not present. This position provides leadership across departments to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for members, staff, volunteers, and program participants. The Manager on Duty serves as the primary escalation contact and decision-maker on site during assigned shifts and is responsible for maintaining service standards, supporting staff, coordinating incident response, and ensuring smooth facility and program operations. The Manager on Duty models YMCA values and service expectations while advancing the YMCA's mission through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Cause-Driven Leadership Thinks, communicates, and behaves as a cause-driven leader and role model for staff and members Promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job-related functions Demonstrates YMCA service and engagement principles throughout each shift Maintains a visible leadership presence across the facility Branch Leadership Coverage & Decision Authority Serves as the highest-level operational leader on site during assigned shifts when branch leadership is not present Acts with delegated authority from branch leadership to support safe and effective branch operations Provides direction to staff across all departments to ensure consistent service delivery and member experience Serves as the primary escalation contact for incidents, facility concerns, staffing gaps, and member situations during assigned shifts Coordinates response to emergencies, behavioral concerns, and operational disruptions Makes real-time operational decisions related to safety, staffing adjustments, and program continuity Communicates significant situations to branch leadership and ensures appropriate follow-up Center Operations & Facility Oversight Oversees daily operations of the center during assigned shifts Ensures the facility remains safe, clean, and welcoming Conducts routine building rounds to monitor conditions and proactively address needs Serves as the first point of contact for facility issues or incidents Ensures building systems and program spaces remain operational and appropriately supervised Opens and closes the facility in accordance with association procedures, including securing the building, ensuring staff departure, and activating or deactivating building systems as required Completes required shift reports and operational checklists Staff Leadership & Support Provides direction to all employees working in the center during assigned shifts Reinforces YMCA culture expectations and service standards Addresses immediate staff concerns and communicates follow-up needs to program directors or branch leadership Coaches frontline staff on service behaviors and engagement practices Supports welcome center operations and assists with tours during peak hours as needed Member Experience Responds to member questions regarding programs, schedules, procedures, and facility use Supports service recovery when concerns arise Ensures a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members and guests Strengthens member relationships through visible leadership presence and engagement Risk Management & Documentation Maintains accurate shift log documentation Documents incidents and ensures appropriate follow-up Completes required reports and compliance checklists during assigned shifts Supports emergency response coordination when necessary Assists with implementation of association risk management practices and facility supervision expectations Youth Protection & Safety Adheres to YMCA policies related to professional boundaries with youth Completes required abuse risk management training Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors immediately Follows mandated reporting requirements and job-specific risk management responsibilities Equity & Inclusion Works effectively with diverse groups from all social and economic segments of the community Demonstrates commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in daily work Authority During Assigned Shifts During assigned shifts, the Manager on Duty represents branch leadership and has delegated authority to make operational decisions necessary to maintain safety, service quality, staffing coverage, and program continuity across the Charleston Family YMCA.This includes authority to:
Provide direction to staff across all departments Address member concerns and support service recovery Respond to incidents and coordinate emergency procedures Make temporary staffing adjustments as needed to maintain safe supervision ratios and service delivery Modify or pause activities when safety or facility conditions require it Coordinate response to behavioral concerns involving members or participants Initiate communication with branch leadership regarding significant situations requiring follow-up Document incidents and operational concerns occurring during assigned shifts Secure the facility and serve as the final on-site leadership contact during opening and closing procedures Program directors and department staff remain responsible for their program areas. During evening and weekend coverage hours, the Manager on Duty serves as the primary on-site operational leader supporting coordinated decision-making across the facility.QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 21 years of age High school diploma or GED required Minimum one year of customer service experience required Previous supervisory or leadership experience strongly preferred Strong written and verbal communication skills Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word and Excel and internet navigation Demonstrated ability to build authentic relationships Ability to support a collaborative team environment Commitment to the YMCA mission and causeWORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
