Job Description

Commercial Construction Inspector NexGen Construction Management Laguna Beach, CA Job Details Part-time | Full-time $45 - $67 an hour 1 hour ago Benefits Health insurance Dental insurance 401(k) Parental leave Vision insurance 401(k) matching Professional development assistance Qualifications Interpersonal skills American Concrete Institute (ACI) Standards Schedule management Driver's License Problem-solving Full Job Description Public Works & Building Inspector Laguna Beach, CA | Public and Private Client Projects | Full-Time Join a growing construction and project management firm in beautiful Laguna Beach, where your eye for detail and code knowledge directly protects our clients and their communities. We're looking for a hands-on, experienced Public Works & Building Inspector who takes pride in getting it right in the field. For two decades, we've partnered with public and private clients to deliver successful ground-up construction, renovation, and infrastructure projects across Southern California. As we keep growing, we need an inspector who can represent us in the field on both municipal and private projects, someone who's thorough, fair, and easy to work with under pressure. The Opportunity This is a Building & Public Works Inspector role covering construction projects for both municipal/public agency clients and private commercial clients — one week you might be inspecting a public street and utility improvement project, the next a ground-up commercial building or an interior renovation. You'll be the person on-site verifying that work meets approved plans, applicable codes, and public works standards, and under the direction of our construction manager, you'll work directly with contractors, engineers, and municipal staff to keep projects moving per the plans. If you like variety, take pride in doing inspections right, and want to be part of a growing, close-knit team, this is the seat for you. You'll be based out of our office in Laguna Beach — a five-minute walk from the beach — with regular time in the field across active job sites. What You'll Do Perform field inspections of building construction (foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and final) for compliance with approved plans and applicable codes Perform field inspections of public works and infrastructure construction — streets, sidewalks, storm drains, utilities, grading, and erosion control — for compliance with approved plans and public works standards Represent NexGen in the field on behalf of our clients, serving as a clear and fair point of contact at the site for contractors and project teams Review plans, permits, submittals and specifications ahead of inspections to know what you're looking at before you arrive Document inspection findings, issue correction notices, and coordinate re-inspections Maintain accurate daily inspection logs and reports Respond to code compliance questions and field issues, escalating to the project team or municipal staff as needed Coordinate with project managers, engineers, architects, and municipal officials to resolve field issues quickly Support other project or proposal needs as workload allows; we're a lean team and everyone contributes beyond their core role when it counts What We're Looking For 3+ years of experience performing building and/or public works inspections, ideally on both municipal and private projects ICC certification (Building Inspector, Combination Inspector, or similar) preferred, or willingness to obtain within an agreed timeframe Working knowledge of the California Building Code and public works construction standards Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and permits Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting findings and working with contractors, engineers, and municipal staff Comfortable working independently in the field and managing a daily inspection schedule Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for site visits A team player who's excited to grow with the company and take on new challenges beyond a typical inspector scope Why You'll Love Working Here Real variety — municipal and private projects, ground-up construction and renovation Hands-on mentorship and learning from experienced leadership across construction, inspection, and operations Work out of a modern office a five-minute walk from the beach in Laguna Beach Room to grow with the company as it expands — this role has genuine potential to grow in scope and responsibility for the right candidate
