Job Summary The Special Inspector is responsible for conducting on-site inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with building codes, specifications, and safety regulations. This role plays a critical part in maintaining quality and ensuring that materials and workmanship meet required standards. Key Responsibilities On-Site Inspections Perform regular inspections and testing of construction work, including soils, aggregates, asphalt, concrete, steel, masonry, and other materials, to ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable codes. Document inspection findings and communicate any deficiencies or non-compliance issues to the project manager or contractor. Testing and Sampling Conduct field testing of construction materials (e.g., soil, concrete, asphalt) and collect samples for laboratory analysis. Ensure proper testing procedures are followed and that equipment is calibrated and maintained. Documentation and Reporting Prepare detailed inspection reports, including observations, test results, and any corrective actions taken or needed. Maintain accurate and organized records of inspections, tests, and communications related to the project. Collaboration and Communication Work closely with contractors, project managers, engineers, and architects to ensure project specifications are understood and followed. Provide technical advice and guidance to construction teams regarding quality control and compliance issues. Quality Assurance and Compliance Ensure that all work complies with local, state, and federal building codes, as well as industry standards (e.g., ASTM, AASHTO). Participate in quality assurance programs and assist in the development of quality control plans. Safety Oversight Promote and follow safety practices on construction sites, ensuring compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. Report any safety violations or hazardous conditions immediately. Continual Learning and Development Stay updated on current construction practices, codes, and regulations through ongoing education and professional development. Attend training sessions and workshops to enhance technical skills and knowledge.
Qualifications Education :
High School Diploma Experience :
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in construction inspection or materials testing.
Certifications :
Certification as a Special Inspector (e.g., ICC Special Inspector, NICET, ACI, Caltrans) is highly desirable. Minimum Certifications ACI Field Grade 1 Nuclear Gauge Operator Safety Training ICC Reinforced Concrete Preferred Certifications ICC Soils ICC Masonry ICC Structural Steel (Bolting) DSA Masonry Caltrans

Skills Strong knowledge of construction materials, methods, and building codes. Excellent observational and analytical skills, with a keen attention to detail. Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of effectively conveying technical information. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively. Proficient in using inspection tools and equipment, as well as computer software for documentation and reporting. Working Conditions Primarily field-based, with a mix of office work for documentation and reporting. May require working outdoors in various weather conditions and standing for extended periods. Occasional travel to different job sites as required.
