Job Title:
Leak Inspector Job Description The Leak Inspector performs field-based inspections of utility-owned gas meters and related facilities to help prevent gas leaks and support public safety. This entry-level role combines customer interaction, mechanical aptitude, and detailed documentation while working independently in the field throughout the utility's service territory. Responsibilities Perform periodic facility inspections and surveys on utility-owned gas meters in residential and commercial settings. Enter customers' homes in a professional manner to conduct inspections and explain the purpose of the visit and the work being performed. Conduct integrity surveys, including direct assessments and close interval surveys, in accordance with established procedures. Complete all required documentation accurately and thoroughly, using both paper forms and a handheld tablet. Ensure all readings, records, and reports comply with company procedures and regulatory requirements. Support the successful completion of regulatory audits and inspections by maintaining accurate records and following prescribed processes. Perform audit reviews with operations teams and provide support during internal and external audits. Communicate clearly with customers, colleagues, and supervisors regarding inspection status, findings, and any issues encountered in the field. Interface professionally with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, contractors, and other stakeholders as needed. Follow all safety protocols and participate in safety initiatives aimed at preventing gas leaks and protecting the public. Attend and actively participate in required training, including classroom instruction, homework, practice exams, and certification testing. Demonstrate the ability to complete inspections independently using provided tools and equipment after training and job shadowing. Maintain reliable attendance and communicate proactively with supervision regarding schedule, sick time, and other attendance matters. Use company vehicles responsibly when assigned, adhering to all driving and safety policies. Walk several miles per day, climb stairs and ladders, and work outdoors in all weather conditions for the duration of an 8-hour workday. Essential Skills Valid state driver's license and reliable vehicle; at least 1 year of driving experience. High school diploma or equivalent. Strong reliability and professionalism, especially when entering customers' homes. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to speak clearly and explain the job to customers. Customer service orientation and the ability to interact respectfully and courteously with the public. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude; experience in cable, HVAC, piping, automotive, construction, or general labor environments is beneficial for this entry-level role. Basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for accurate documentation and recordkeeping. Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team. Intermediate knowledge of mathematics and algebra to support measurement, calculations, and technical documentation. Willingness and ability to work 100% in the field and travel within the assigned utility territory. Commitment to following safety procedures and regulatory requirements at all times. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior experience in inspection, field service, construction, general labor, or as an inspection technician is an advantage. Understanding in cable technology, HVAC, piping, or automotive mechanics is a plus. Strong interpersonal skills and initiative, with the ability to solve problems and handle unexpected field situations. Experience using handheld tablets or mobile devices for routing, data entry, and reporting. Consistent job history demonstrating reliability and long-term commitment. Comfort working under structured training and probationary periods with performance expectations tied to testing, homework completion, and field competency. Ability to adapt to changing daily routes and work priorities while maintaining high quality and safety standards. Why Work Here? Work Environment This is a 100% field-based position with daily travel throughout the utility territory. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with optional Saturday shifts available at supervisory request and at the contractor's discretion. You will typically report directly to the job site, receive your daily route via a handheld tablet, and work self-sufficiently throughout the day. Tailboard meetings occur at warehouse locations in Hartford and New Haven, and you must be flexible to travel within these areas as needed. The role requires extensive walking, climbing stairs and ladders, and working outdoors in all weather conditions. The employer provides a simple tool set and safety equipment, including a flashlight, gas detector, field binder for paperwork, ID badges, tools and tool belt, handheld tablet, flame-resistant shirts and pants, safety vest, and hard hat. Training begins with OSHA and company orientation, followed by a week of classroom instruction with homework and practice exams completed on your own time, a week of certification testing and job shadowing, and a structured evaluation of field competency. The first 90 days serve as a probationary period focused on performance, training engagement, safety, and reliability. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Watertown, CT. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
