Building Code Inspector Department of Buildings - 3.5 Washington, DC Job Details Full-time $62,158 - $80,032 a year 7 hours ago Qualifications Research Driver's License Full Job Description This is a trainee position located in the District of Columbia Department of Buildings (DOB), within the division of the Office of Construction and Building Standards (OCBS). The mission of the Department of Buildings is to protect the safety of residents, businesses, and visitors and advance the development of the built environment through permitting, inspections, and code enforcement. OCBS is responsible for ensuring public and private sector safety in the District of Columbia through inspection record management; code compliance, occupancy and zoning inspections for all buildings and structures; maintenance of issued building/trade permits; and enforcement of illegal construction activity, all in accordance with the adopted DC Construction Codes and referenced standards. Duties and Responsibilities The position performs entry level on-site inspections and prepares inspection reports indicating compliance or non-compliance with the approved plans and applicable DC Construction Codes. Under a combination of direct and general guidance, incumbent observes and performs aspects of inspections of building construction sites and projects. Examines construction, alterations, and repairs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, approved building plans and specifications. Creates and issues inspection reports, Notices, and Orders. May provide limited technical assistance and research on construction codes and permit processes to parties such as contractors, engineers, architects, property owners, business owners, and the general public. Observes or performs aspects of inspections, investigations, and compliance work related to building construction sites and projects to ensure that each aspect of construction, alteration, or repair compliant with applicable codes, regulations, and approved building plans and specifications. Incumbent regularly attends training courses and completes progress exams in preparation for completion of the International Code Council (ICC) certification exams necessary to attain the qualification credentials of a Building Inspector I (Grade 11) position. Qualifications and Education Specialized experience is work that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression. Licenses and Certifications Incumbents must obtain and maintain a valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record and periodic review of driving record required and conducted. All certifications shall be maintained by the incumbent as a condition of employment. Failure to maintain certifications may be grounds for employment termination. Within 12 months of hire the incumbent is required to obtain at least (2) ICC Certifications at the Residential Level in Residential Building (B1), Residential Electrical (E1), Residential Mechanical (M1), or Residential Plumbing (P1) issued by the International Code Council (ICC), in order to meet the minimum requirements of the Building Inspector I (Grade 11) position. OR Within 12 months of hire the incumbent is required to obtain at least (2) ICC Certifications at the Commercial Level in Commercial Building (B2), Commercial Electrical (E2), Commercial Mechanical (M2), or Commercial Plumbing (P2) issued by the International Code Council (ICC), in order to meet the minimum requirements of the Building Inspector I (Grade 11) position. Failure to acquire the additional certifications necessary to complete the qualification credentials for a Building Inspector I position within the required 12-month timeframe shall be grounds for employment termination. All Certifications must be maintained per ICC requirements and are the financial responsibility of the Inspector. Working Conditions/Environment Work involves frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noise, high-VOC chemicals, heights, or confined spaces, etc. Use of ladders is required. Some work is performed in an office environment which is adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. This position requires exposure to construction sites and the safety issues at each site. At many sites the incumbent is required to wear safety equipment such as a hard hat, safety vest, eye, and hearing protection, and/or steel toe safety shoes.
