Job Description

This position performs plan review work of commercial and residential construction to secure compliance with the ordinances and codes governing building, plumbing, mechanical, gas, accessibility, or electrical codes. The Plans Examiner position provides a career path for multi-discipline plans examiner positions. Placement in pay grades will be dependent upon credentials held by the employee and/or the selected applicant in conjunction with the acquiring position being recruited.

The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility but shall not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods, or otherwise to balance the workload. Performs plan review of commercial and residential construction plans submitted for permitting. Plans daily work route of inspections to effectively and efficiently perform field work. Advises owners and contractors on the provisions of the codes and ordinances governing construction and on modifications necessary to meet requirements. Advises owners and contractors on FEMA rules regarding construction in special flood hazard areas Reads and interprets blueprints and specifications for building code compliance. Daily attendance required. Attendance at department meetings and other meetings assigned by supervisor and other management or administrative staff required. Emergency Response County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description. Employees may request an exemption from this requirement by submitting the appropriate exemption form, subject to review and approval. Minimum Qualifications High school graduation or equivalent (GED). College or vocational training in building construction, mechanical installation, electrical installation, or plumbing installation (Preferred). A minimum of four (4) years as an inspector, plans examiner, engineer, architect, superintendent, foreman, or competent mechanic in charge. Must have hands-on experience in the specific trades and/or disciplines required for the position. Applicants must submit a resume and cover letter tailored to the position. Application materials must demonstrate clear, professional written communication skills. A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted at the County's discretion. Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations Standard Certification as Plans Examiner from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, Board of Building Code Administrators and lnspectors, or the ability to obtain a Provisional Certification within (60) days of employment and Standard Certification within one (1) year of issuance of Provisional Certification in accordance with Florida Statutes Chapter468, Part Xll. Possess or have ability to secure a Single Trade Plans Examiner credential from the Florida Building Code Administrators & lnspectors Board. Must have and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with a good driving record as defined by the County's current insurance carrier. NIMs certification 100, 200, and 700 Pay Grade 9: $27.53

The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 30 pounds. The job requires frequent bending, twisting, and occasional squatting, climbing, kneeling, and balancing. The job requires the completion of tasks that involve simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, and typing. . The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.
