Job Description

The City of Sergeant Bluff, IA (pop. 5,015) is seeking qualified applicants for the regular part-time position of Rental Inspector. Under the general direction of the Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer, this position is responsible for managing the rental inspections program and assisting with property maintenance and nuisance abatement enforcement for the City of Sergeant Bluff. Duties include communications with rental property owners, annual inspections and reporting, investigating and responding to public inquiries and complaints, as well as the proactive enforcement of regulations related to property maintenance and other municipal code violations. The position will assist in other operational areas of the Department, as needed. High School diploma or equivalent, supplemented by courses or experience in code enforcement, inspections, or experience in the building trades desired. ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector experience preferred, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire. Thorough knowledge or ability to learn and implement local codes and ordinances, State laws, national model codes, and accepted practices related to the enforcement of property maintenance is preferred. Essential position requirements include the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, to interact with the general public and to handle communicating difficult news to people in a courteous and professional manner, and the ability to prioritize, organize, and complete required duties timely and accurately. Candidates must be detail oriented, flexible, and a team player. The ideal candidate will possess a working knowledge of web-based computer software programs, and should be proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel). Twenty-Five to Twenty-Nine (25-29) hours per week, flexible schedule on Monday - Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Starting wage is $23.57/hour with incentive pay for acquiring certain certifications. Must live within a thirty-minute commute of the City limits.
