A Construction or Building Inspector inspects new construction or renovated buildings to check for compliance with government safety codes and zoning requirements. Checks building structures and foundations, or provides inspections of electrical systems, plumbing or heating and cooling systems, or building elevators.
BUILDING INSPECTOR / PLANS EXAMINER BUILDING DEPARTMENT
Pay Range $34 - $40 per hour

Non-Exempt Purpose of Class Performs a variety of technical duties related to the inspection and review of construction plans and documents; performs routine and complex technical on-site inspections to ensure compliance with City building codes and other applicable City codes and ordinances; performs related work as required. Primary Function The Building Inspector/ Plans Examiner performs technical inspections and reviews building plans for residential and commercial construction projects. This position ensures compliance with local, state, and national building codes, ordinances, and regulations. Reporting to the Building Official, the inspector exercises independent judgment in interpreting and enforcing building standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (will vary by assignment) Conduct inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects at various stages to ensure compliance with building, structural, mechanical, energy, and accessibility requirements. Review building plans and specifications for adherence to applicable codes and ordinances. Communicate with contractors, architects, engineers, and property owners to provide guidance, answer questions, and enforce compliance. Issue notices of violation or work stoppage orders when necessary. Prepare clear, accurate inspection and plan review reports and maintain detailed records. Coordinate with other City departments and agencies on related inspection and enforcement matters. Attend professional development and training to stay current on code updates, inspection methods, and safety standards. Performs other related duties as required.
Competency Requirements:
Comprehensive knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), and related state and local codes/ordinances. Knowledge of building construction practices, methods, materials, accessibility standards, and safety procedures. Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and technical documents. Strong skills in identifying deficiencies, hazards, and noncompliance in construction work. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working with contractors, property owners, and the public. Ability to exercise sound judgment, diplomacy, and enforce regulations consistently. Proficiency in preparing reports, maintaining records, and using inspection-related software. Acceptable Experience and Training High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or higher in construction technology, architecture, engineering, or a related field preferred. Minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in building construction, inspection, or plan review. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Special Qualifications Required:
Possession of a valid Idaho driver's license (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
ICC Certifications Required:
B1 Residential Building Inspector Certification. Must acquire residential mechanical certification within 6 months of hire date.

ICC Commercial Certifications ICC 2B Commercial Building Inspector Certification ICC 2M Commercial Mechanical Inspector Certification ICC B3 Commercial Plans Examiner Certification Obtaining future ICC commercial certifications and other certifications will be required by the building official. Essential Physical Abilities Ability to perform inspections requiring walking, standing, bending, climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, and working at heights. Ability to lift and carry materials or equipment up to 50 pounds. Adequate vision and hearing to read plans, inspect construction details, and communicate effectively. Ability to operate a motor vehicle for field inspections.
