Job Description

The Write‑Up Inspector is responsible for inspecting tank cars and reviewing all related documentation to identify defects, required repairs, and regulatory non‑compliance. This role prepares accurate repair estimates, billing repair cards, and inspection documentation in accordance with AAR, FRA, and company standards, and performs final inspections to verify quality and completeness of repairs. Working independently, the inspector applies technical expertise and judgment to ensure timely, accurate write‑ups, supports claims resolution, and collaborates with railroads, lessees, and internal partners to maintain safety, compliance, profitability, and customer satisfaction. Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to: Inspect incoming tank cars to identify defects, damage, and regulatory non‑compliance. Prepare detailed write‑ups, billing repair cards, labor and material estimates, and proper repair coding. Interpret and apply AAR, FRA, fleet repair standards, customer requirements, and company procedures. Perform in‑process and final inspections to confirm repairs meet regulatory and quality standards. Identify potential lease or damage claims and collaborate with internal and external partners to resolve them. Communicate inspection findings with railroads, lessees, outside inspectors, and internal teams to expedite repairs. Ensure inspections and estimates are completed accurately, thoroughly, and within required timeframes. Support quality initiatives, continuous improvement efforts, and Responsible Care programs.
Required Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent Strong knowledge of AAR and FRA regulations and tank car repair standards. Understanding of tank car design, components, and inspection processes. Mechanical aptitude with the ability to use railroad gauges, testing techniques, and inspection equipment. Ability to work independently, make sound judgments, and maintain a high level of attention to detail.Preferred Qualifications:
Proficiency in computer systems, including AS400, Lotus Notes, and Microsoft Office. 3-5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Work Environment & Schedule:
Performing duties in an industrial railcar repair environment involves regular exposure to challenging physical and environmental conditions. Work is frequently conducted outdoors and may require extended periods in varying weather conditions. Employees are exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise associated with manufacturing and repair operations. The role requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting and carrying materials, climbing in and out of railcars, working at heights and in confined spaces. Ability to enter tank cars through 20‑inch manway openings. Manual dexterity and physical coordination are necessary to operate tools and safety equipment. Employees may experience minor cuts, bruises, or other risks typical of an industrial setting and must maintain constant awareness to safely operate equipment, particularly in confined or elevated areas. There is potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills. Must be willing and able to work in an industrial repair environment, complying with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols Vision correctable to 20/30 for inspection activities.On-site work arrangement:
